So sgc, you sneak over and get some today?

Sold all 10 of my 7 week old pullets today! My oldest was sad to see his favorite go (Miss Mary Mack - because she's black), but I reminded him we will have plenty more black chicks here soon enough. That leaves 5 cockerels that we'll most likely keep here until they are big enough for freezer camp. Unless anyone is interested in partridge rock cockerels? Waiting for my younger chicks (3 weeks old now) to get a little bigger, then I'll probably sell a bunch of the pullets once they've moved outside. Hopefully the next hatch will give me what I want! Really hoping for some splash and blues, and hopefully some more feathered legs, but of course, all the blue from the first hatch are male!


Random question for you all... Are there any large/standard sized breeds that have feathered legs, beards, and pea or similar small combs? I know there are Favs, but are there any other breeds that come in other colors? Particularly if they come in b/b/s.

On that note... If I were to grow out my blue pea-combed feather footed cockerel and bred him to my blue and black americaunas, would that produce b/b/s chicks with feathered feet *and* beards?

if you bred your blue pea comb feather leg to blue and black americaunas you will get blues and blacks only, no splash. the only way you could get splash is if any of your blues are really very dark splash. all should have feathered legs and maybe bearded or not, not sure on that gene.

I have a new source of entertainment: leave the outside light on all night, then take a child's butterfly net, catch the resultant moths, and dump them in the coop. So far, the Doms beat the rest of the gang to the feast. Love those birds... too bad I don't have any pullets!!! If anyone has a Dom pullet to sell later on in the summer, I'd be interested in buying one. PM me.

Who uses electric poultry fencing? I'm curious what you use for a charger, and how you set it up to keep it and the battery water proof, and what you use for a ground rod. I may use some BD money to set up electric fencing if my current charger will work with it. My charger is pretty big, designed to cover up to 3 miles of fencing, uses a car battery. Since my big tractor is now to big and heavy to actually be portable, I'm having to re-think my chicken management.

there were a bunch of people from byc , of course i remember no ones byc names. I did give out a few byc business cards so Im sure we will have a few new members here. lots plants, a rescue donkey, some chickens of assorted varieties including dominics, RIR,mallard ducks, silkies, barred rocks and Im sure Im missing some.
the store set up ezups for the swap people to keep them dry and it started raining about 11:00, so just about when i was leaving anyway.

So, what'd you see?????????????? Living vicariously!!! Who was there???

entry forms are now out for the Central Maine Bird Fanciers show which is May 26th (sunday of columbus day weekend). it's free for the public to come watch. we will have a 50/50 raffle, live auction, usually a chinese auction of some nice items and of course the show and tail gate sales. Ash, I should have grabbed some forsythia when I was there!!!

I am also curious about the electric poultry fence. The options I saw were VERY expensive for the electric poultry netting. I am pondering options for a garden fence and I considered electric but if a 3 strand setup wont keep out the chickens it isn't worth it. I let them out last evening hoping they would not make it over to the garden before dark....of course they made a bee line for it!

Speaking of electric fencing I have to get the one for the horses' back up and electrified. Looked out a few minutes ago and there was Gosi happily munching on the grass about twenty feet from the road.

. I grabbed my boots and while putting them on at least four cars sped by. Not one stopped or even slowed. Tells you how observant the drivers were. Fortunately Gosi was a good boy and I was able to walk up to him and attach the lead rope. Glad I had left his halter on from the other day when the farrier was here. I know where he got through the fence so now it has about ten strands of the fence tape plus rope to discourage wandering. Once I put new connectors on the fence posts the charger I have should do the trick. I use a Parmak solar charger. Runs a bit over $100 but is great for area where an outlet isn't available to power a regular charger.

Also on the subject of horses the trails are now open.

I hope to get Stefnir out tomorrow for a quick ride. So for anyone who was interested in riding and Icelandic let me know and we can come up with a day (weekends only) to take the boys out. Since Gosi seems so eager to not be in the fenced in paddock he might as well get some trail miles in.
