My local Blue Seal had a truckload sale yesterday $2 off every 40-50 pound bag of grain. Not too bad a savings. I was low on food anyway so I picked up two bags of layer pellets for the birds and two bags of hay stretcher for the horses. I also earned enough points with their rewards program to get $10 off my next purchase.

Cleaned out the giant dog crate that I have in the pen for the birds. Now the crate is clean and drying in the sun and I have a mound of very wet shavings, hay and other gunk in the middle of the pen. Have to wait for that to dry out a bit before I can remove it. Also found some hidden eggs in there. Nice ripe ones. I just love it when you accidentally crush them and they explode. :sick

lovely lol. I am neurotic about checking the run for eggs. I'm so afraid my son will be the one who steps on it, then he'll run through the house to find me and tell me, leaving smelly egg gook in his path.
 
I found an awful egg once in a nesting box. I check them daily. I have no idea how it happened but I picked it up and it felt light and I just barely got it outside the coop before it exploded. I could smell it in the house for days when the wind would blow.

Wish my place would have 2$ off a Blue Seal bag. That's a great deal.
 
What I need for id is to see the shanks. That's all.

Working on the new coop. Its supposed to go to the new site tonight. I can't wait to get this group of Marans out of my bedroom window. They have started crowing

A question for all of you knowledgeable ladies. I got two hens a couple weeks ago. They are last springs chicks. I moved them into the main coop/run 5 days ago. This morning one was in a tizzy. Everyone when out to free range and she stayed behind. When I went to let the girls back in, I discovered she had pulled all the bedding from the nest boxes (which is in the raised coop) as well as the golf balls from said boxes and made herself a nest right in front of the run door. She was pecking at the girls trying to get in past her. I tried shooing her and she got really nasty. I resorted to tossing (gently) the seven hens over her and into the run. Later in the afternoon I went to refill the waterer. She quite viciously pecked my ankles as I scaled over her to get in.

Obviously she has gone broody. Is it odd that she'd go broody at a new place when she hasn't even laid (neither New girl has - the integration has been especially rough this time). Should I try taking her off the nest and onto the roost tonight and break down the nest she made? If I take away the golf balls will she try stealing the girls eggs? I'm shocked that she could get those golf balls down the 2' ladder, but I can't imagine the eggs would fair well.
 
MEMama, it sounds like you have a very serious broody! If she won't just take over a nest box, I'd be tempted to put her in a cage for a bit. Maybe if you put a bunch of fake eggs/golf balls in one of the nests she will settle down in it.

I have a couple of broodies right now, and I just let them sit until they tire of it. One of them, I have to wear gloves when I search under her for an egg, as she will draw blood. The other makes some loud screeching, but doesn't really fight back. I took a funny photo of her yesterday. I'll post it in a minute, after I switch to mobile.
