Maine

I would like to chime in that the golden comets/red sex links are good birds, and pretty hardy and friendly. However, I've had 3 of them (albeit not a large number) but two have already died of internal laying problems and the third is generally unwell, I think she's also laying internally and will more than likely succumb to that soon, or have to be put down. I have had a large percentage of the "production" birds get sick from that (almost all of my original leghorns are dead). For some reason my black sex links are not quite as sickly, but they are not well, either. The problems didn't start until about 2.5 yers into their laying cycle, though.
Could you explain this condition please? I have purchased 2 Cochin's from another BYC member from Naples Me. "humphreysfarm". On June 13/13/13 I purchased her 2 Cochins that I thought were so pretty all dressed up for a Steampunker's Ball. Anyway, she told me they were born 5/18/12 and one just started laying on 7/27 one of them started laying but the other still hasn't done a thing. She's not caked up and she's getting around, she gets time free ranging when I'm w/ them and in a tractor. She can fly a short distance (lol) and she just loves to eat the BOSS from my hand! lol I'm still trying to see if there's anything wrong w/ her. And no she's not hiding them on me.
I just love these old dolls, there like girls from the 1890's their just missing their frilly parasols!

Cochins are not known to be great egg layers. It is not unheard of for them to not start laying until they are 8 months old or more. And when they do they may or may not lay every day or even every other day. Do you know if they were laying regularly at their old home? If not then you may just have a really late bloomer. If they were then maybe she just isnt settled in yet even though it has been a couple months. Or there could be some underlying health issue.

Internal laying - their abdomen will be really swollen (under their vent), their butt will more than likely be caked with goo/poo and when very severe the abdomen is so large the waddle like a penguin. You would notice it.

Yes, they were laying 3-5 week, one had gone broody a few times but she's not even that!
I guess she doesn't have that either, it was just a thought! Thanks for the help!

windsor fair is the following week if you miss union and the show is on sunday aug 25th.

How have I never seen these seemingly beloved Golden Comets? Could someone post a photo or two for me, please? I'd love to know where I could get a few of them. I'm going to make an effort to get to the Union fair to check things out--but it's looking like my schedule won't allow it until the weekend.

Friend of mine is a paramedic and I spent a lot of time around them working S&R back in the day.
(Too much time riding in them too, people think my car has a "hit me sign on it")
Hope work goes well for you and you dont have many patients who require strenuous lifting or dangerous scenes.
Thanks for the work!

First chicken 'surgery' yesterday, it was just stitches but still a landmark moment for sure. The neighbor's rooster really really likes one of my hens. We have tried a lot of thing to keep him out of the yard-- even the dog taking a bite out of his tail feathers, but he just keeps crossing the road-- yes we now know why chickens cross the road now. I was stewarding at the Union Fair so I wasn't here to keep a watchful eye. "Fred" came by and his spurs sliced my hen's side open about 3.5-4". Out came the needle and thread. Poor thing. But she is likely to heal better this way. Antibiotic water for the next week I would guess and a private pen. She isn't too happy about that but until Fred gets another house with enough girls to keep him happy.... henny might stay in solitary :/

Kudos to you Ash on the stitches!!

We've added another 4 legged furry child. Meet Mattawamkeag aka Matti--the 4 month old Maine Coon.

We visited the Houlton Humane Society during our college orientation weekend in The County. My husband & daughter convinced me we should go pet the cats at the shelter. I told them I don't like going to the shelter because it makes me sad when I have to leave them there. I never thought for 1 minute that "Mr. No More Animals" would agree to another cat but here she is! Right now she is attacking a feather, racing through the house with it and having a grand time!

Adorable kitten!! We almost ended up with a 3rd cat not long ago, someone dumped some on our road, we were able to catch one....we ended up just keeping him until he was big enough and healthy enough to be adopted. It really is hard to go into the shelter and see all of those faces- good for you for bringing one home!

What a cutie. That look of innocence is priceless. Love the name.
