Maine

I'm in Western Mass but just got a message from a friend of mine near Kennebunk. They discover a chicken on their porch this evening. They are trying to make him or her safe and comfortable for the night while they try to find where it came from. They are not chicken folks but are worried about it. I've given them a little guidance but... If it makes it through the night without getting killed by a predator and is still around in the am.... Does anyone have any idea where they could bring it that might take it? I've asked them to send me a picture in the morning
They can check with the Animal Welfare Society in Kennebunk. They probably dont have the facilities for a chicken but I would think they would know of a place that would be able to take the bird.

I wish I video taped this to share but I was laughing too hard!!! So my little 10yo farmer is looking for eggs in the nesting box. She finds 2 chickens come in and scare her. They run out and she goes back to looking and 2 more fly in the door she screams again LOL...then she skips across the yard to fill their water and sees them running behind her. She runs...they chase her...she screams...repeat! LOL!!!!

No time to catch up, but heres a photo and video update of the little ones! Trying to get the "rare exotic" out here for a photo shoot.

"Um excuse me...trying to take a bath here!"

Sounds adorable!! Must get it on video!!

Well, since DH is not putting the gutters back up, I made a feeder out of a short piece. He came home in time to see me leaving the garage with zip-ties & pliers and asked "What are you doing now?" **** zip-ties weren't big enough so I went to look for wire and ask for his help. Found 2 gutter hangers while looking for wire! Ta-da!! Can't wait for the girls to totally ignore it tomorrow morning when I let them out.

My youngest is coming home from college for the weekend!

It will be nice to see her!! She was IM'ing with her grandmother who told me, "I think she may be a little homesick." Thank goodness for Grammies!!

Depending on where they live, I would imagine they aren't far from the chicken's home. It can be a little awkward approaching neighbors if you don't know they well, but I'm sure it would be fairly easy to spot which neighbors keep chickens. A simple "is your flock missing a member" could be a good ice breaker. I doubt the lonely chick ran too far from home.

Must be a classy bird, though, to stay on the porch and let them take care of it! Sounds like it had a long night.

In reference to the chick photos, sorry, I have no shame! They are hilarious, and I have to share their comedy with you guys. Consider it payback for all the awesome photos I've seen over the past few months while I had no flock of my own! Now we're getting close to even! =P

Cheers

p.s. thanks for the advice on silkies, I can't imagine anyone in the area has any silkie chicks they'd be willing to part with so late in the season--but perhaps you guys could point me toward someone who wouldn't mind selling me a couple?

I have ten little silkies in the brooder right now. They are Cackle hatchery birds about 6 weeks old so just a bit older than your new little ones. I would be willing to part with a couple if you are interested.

Jdoane, what kind of a chicken is it? I sold 2 of my BRs to someone who lives in Kennebunk & she told me they've been going over to the neighbors. That would be funny if it was one of them! It would be either "Nellie" or "Lucy."

I will try to find out. They aren't chicken people so they won't be able to tell me breed.

They are actually in arundle (outside of Kennebunk). Description sounds like it could be a BO. Could it be your friend's?
