Howdy all... I am from Nova Scotia but will be visiting Maine this summer. Just wondering if anyone knows where I can find some Blue Laced Red Wyandotte hatching eggs ?

I have a little boy silkie that would love to have a girl friend.

It's tempting, but I already have a roo, and I have no idea how he'd react to another boy hanging around.

I got one the other day for the first time, too!! Hilarious!! I had no idea that those happened, so had to google it. I am definitely going to blow it out and keep it to put next to the biggest double-yolker I ever got that I also blew out.

I should have saved my first double-yolker! Haha. It was enormous!!

TildaMai... howdy neighbor. Buckeyes would be a good choice for winter hardy but I can't speak to their demeanor.

My barn is flooding some as well. I have put down some pallets I had so we could all walk above that and left a puddle for the ducks to enjoy on the days when I am not home to let the out to enjoy the larger puddles in the yard.

No goose eggs here since the first one. I am jealous Widget.

Hey there all my fellow Mainers!! DH and I just came across an issue. We have ordered our chickens from a hatchery across the country and forgot to add the mareks vaccination. The company does not allow us to add on to the order at this time as they are about to ship the chicks this week. soo...Does anyone know of anyone in the state of Maine that sells it? We need the whole kit and kaboodle!

The Mereks vaccine will have to be ordered on line unless your vet can get it. I just got mine from Hakes Twin City Poultry Supplies in Ohio. Two days it was here. Total cost was 33.50, the cheapest I place I could find. You will have to get needles and syringes also. They send very good directions on how to do this. I am doing mine tomorrow.

Welcome to BYC 87jmchugh. You can choose to vaccinate, or not, depending on what you feel is most prudent to do. At least one hatchery DOES NOT recommend Marek's vaccination for the small flock. There is some evidence that turkeys impart a bit of immunity to Marek's to a chicken flock. There are plenty of wild turkeys in the state of Maine. Also, there are at least 6 strains of Marek's, and the vaccine may or may not contain the strain that your flock will be exposed to. Even though most birds are exposed to Marek's, very few of them become infected. It appears to be an opportunistic disease which shows up when a flock or particular bird is run down, and has a poor immune system. You'll find that there is a lot of controversy regarding keeping the back yard flock. Vaccinate? Medicated feed? Preventive Worming? Free range? Heated coop? Supplemental light? My advice to you is to read both sides of every issue, then make your decision. Realize that no matter what you choose to do, a lot of folks will be convinced that you are doing it wrong, and others will be convinced that you are brilliant because you are doing it the same way they would! Regarding most decisions, there is no right or wrong answer. But there is the choice that makes the most sense to you and which works best for your flock.

Thank you all for the replies it has been very helpful. I have decided on a couple of Wyandottes, just not on the colour! They seem to be the most suggested plus I love their look. I would like to know more on the Buckeyes, Australorps and Orpingtons before making a final decision on who will share the coop with them! Next step is to get some traps, we have skunks under the barn, opossums under the deck and a racoon in the summer months that likes to hang out in the barn!

ETA: I checked out your post with pictures, those are some gorgeous looking birds. I just love Wyandottes and those BLRW are gorgeous !
