Maine

Right now very nice. Overall I guess it depends on what you like. I hate hot weather. Anything over 80 (forgive me for not converting to Celsius) is too hot for me. Temperatures range from well below freezing to three or four days a year above 90.
Depending on where in Maine you are the weather does vary a bit. Closer to the coast it tends to stay a few degrees cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. Not much of a difference but sometimes enough to make things more comfortable.
We do get snow. Usually starts in December and stops in March with the once in a great while April storm. Then we have mud season until everything melts. Followed by black fly season. Also tourist season. That lasts until late fall after all the trees have lost their leaves. Then it is back to winter.

It's about a month where these nasty biting things called black flies hatch and eat you alive. (Can you tell I'm not a native Mainer?) I prefer not to label it black fly season as it's also gnat season (they love to fly in all your facial orfices), biting shiny fly (no idea what the real name of it is) season, horsefly season (even larger biting flies) and the mosquitoes start to come out too. For me, it's DEET season.

Don't get me wrong - I love to live here. I'm from Maryland originally so it is a bit of a shock for me, weather wise. The snow and dark season are just long enough that they end at about the time you're ready to move the heck out of here. I'm still not used to the wet and cold spring so every year I've been tricked into thinking spring's here and I start my seeds indoors. Then about a month later I have to restart them because I planted them outdoors too early and they died. The summer is a fantastic temperature and there's really only about a week or two that you might (MIGHT) need air conditioning. Fall is drop dead gorgeous and a nice, crisp cool.

Mostly though I love that this place is still mostly rural farmland. It reminds me of Maryland back in the 80s before it became DC suburbs and all the farms were bought out and turned into housing and retail developments. I love not having traffic, having neighbors that give you your space yet stick up for you when needed, I love being able to afford acres of land to have my dream homestead on (even if it is filled with poison ivy).

Black flies are evil creatures that think bug repellent is an invitation to come to dinner. Dinner being our blood. And they seem to travel in packs. Compared to Mosquitos they are about 50x more annoying.

What brings you to Maine? I just checked out your photographs and drawings and they are beautiful! I'm an art teacher (and sometimes sculptor).

Feather lady: I also loved the photos of the kids with ducks!

Wondering if SCG ate an of those tasty-looking roosters yet?
