Broody

Ok, I brought my broody Blue Splash Maran inside. It looks like she has decided to commit fully to being broody. She is in a guinea pig cage covered with a table cloth. She can stand up, stretch and turn around, but not any more room than that. Unfortunately she is not sitting on any of her own eggs, because she stopped laying about 5 days ago when she really got broody. I let her have 3 warm eggs from other birds and when I went to move her I discovered that yesterday or the day before someone must have crawled in with her and laid an egg, so she has 4.

I have questions:



[FONT='lucida grande', tahoma, verdana, arial, sans-serif]1. Will she sit on these eggs [/FONT]for 21 days or give up 5 days early because she has already been broody?


she will either sit until something hatches or she will sit and then get bored (depends on the bird)- but figure most will sit more then 21 day.


2. Will that one egg hatch 2 days before the others and if it does will she abandon the others? it probably will hatch early and she should continue to sit. (they can hear the chicks in the eggs- so they sit)



3. How much should she eat/drink/poop while broody? I don't want to take her out too much, but I don't want her to get sick either.

she is not expending much energy sitting, so she will not eat often or poop often- usually once daily they will get off the nest if you make them and then they will eat like crazy and poop/ then go back to the nest.


4. What do I do to keep the eggs warm when I take her off to eat/drink?

natural cooling of the eggs while she is off is normal- the hatch is probably delayed a bit (up to 12 hours) vs if you incubator hatched them, but nothing to be concerned with.


5. Is 4 eggs enough for a 1st try? Should I give her another warm 1 or 2 this afternoon?

one egg is enough for a first try, so if you want to give her more, it's just how many eggs can her body cover to have a sucessful hatch. if she can't cover the eggs, those on the edge probably won't hatch or may be delayed if they do hatch.


6. Any other advice?

Anyone interested in some almost POL pullets? A coworker of mine wants to get rid of his flock. He hatched these this summer from a local farmer. What he has is a BLRW pullet, 2 barred rock pullets an EE pullet and an EE roo. The roo got picked by another roo that just went to freezer camp so he doesn't look too hot right now.

They found homes along with two of their offsprings,a lady that lost her coop and chickens to a fire had a new coop built and she needed some chickens.She warned me about heat lamps and to make sure they are screwed into something because the had hers on a board with that thing that looks like pliers and the board shrunk due to the cold she said and the plier thing snaped off and landed in the straw and burnt the coop down.I felt so bad for her becasue her chickens were pets like mine are.So just a reminder check those heat lamps and make sure they are secure.I checked all mine tonight

Thanks, I didn't realize we need to resubscribe. I'm hoping I can figure out the new system. It seems I am always taken to the first page of each thread, not where I was reading, but I haven't had a chance to poke around and see what I can do about it.

Meanwhile, my leghorn was injured today. They were out free-ranging briefly and she came back with blood all over her comb and face. We don't think it was a predator. This poor hen wears pinless peepers, and we think maybe she got hung up on some wire or something under the house, but that is really just a guess.

DH was home when it happened but didn't see anything. He could not catch her, and no one was pecking at her (which is pretty surprising). I got home at dusk, and we were able to pluck her off the roost in bring her in. We removed the pinless peepers, but couldn't really imagine how to clean off the blood, which was already stabbing. It looks like it came from her comb. It is pretty traumatic for her just to be picked up, as we never handle her.

For tonight, she will think she has moved to the tropics. If she is eating well and looking good, we'll put her in the coop tomorrow, perhaps in the cage at first, depending on how the blood looks. I would think she will be thrilled to be rid of the pinless peepers (she's worn them for 9 months). I hope she doesn't go back to her old ruthless feather picking habit!

Yes, I found the little button that says go to first unread post, but it won't take me there. I think you have to mark all the other posts as read or something, and if I try to add a smiley face, I get an error code and lose my whole post, so I will be speaking with a straight face for a while. Hey Guys, I haven't been on in a while, but with all the new designs and stuff, its a little confusing, I like the format a lot better, instead of the old bland one! Well anyways!!!


I am getting some Silver Spangled Hamburg Chickens, And some Pheonix Hens on Saturday, as well as 2 or 3 Angora rabbits! I am really excited!

If anyone is interested in a male khaki campbell duck, or a dutch male rabbit, please let me know we might be able to work something out!
