Maine

what does this sign say or look like?

It says something different on each side. Red paint on wood. Day old chicks for sale and a phone number on one side, on the other it says Chicks, turkeys, and quail.

Not me.

I drive Rt 25 every day but I'm on the Standish end. Well I do drive on it in Gorham on the weekends but only as far as the roundabout. But still I am not involved. What are they advertising?

I'm right on the Gorham Standish border and I commute to USM multiple times each day. It's just before the first round about. Advertising various day olds.

I would love to have some help with my plants this year. I haven't tried to start plants indoors for many years, they were always leggy and never transplanted well. I am determined to start all my own plants from seeds this year. I bought a 4 foot grow light and just don't know what to do next. I know how to plant seeds but am stuck after that.

Does the light stay on 24-7 or just 12 hrs a day?

dh is making a box for the ground with a clear plastic lid for a green house, what size do they go out to the box from indoors?

I move these plants into the ground(gardens) once there is no chance of frost?

I am growing tomatoes, peppers etc

I have gone garden crazy this year, I have blueberry, raspberry and honeyberry bushes coming ...also strawberries and arctic kiwis. Trying to keep the kids very involved with this.

any expertise/help is greatly appreciated

thanks!

I get leggy peppers, but everything else does decently well in my grow box. Leggy tomatoes aren't a huge deal, you can transplant them down very deep into the soil (pinch off leaves) and they'll do better than if you just planted the root ball.

Keep the light on about 16 hours a day, they do need a rest period.

Mine go outside when the weather is just about ready for them and when they'll still fit in your grow box. It depends on the crop, really. Read the back of your seed packet for how warm the soil has to be and how tolerant to cold they are. Peppers and tomatoes aren't that cold tolerant, but maters more so than peppers. My peppers are usually the last thing I put out.

I do a lot of gardening in raised containers (ghetto style plastic cat litter pails) for tomatoes and peppers. Easy to cover if it's going to be cold, and easy(ish) to move to the garage if something really bad comes.

I made a spreadsheet with my seeds and when it says to start them and put them out. I made my last frost free date about 2 weeks before the "official date" because it's been warm this year and I have season extenders like row covers and wall-o-waters.

2012 Garden
Last frost free date 18 May
4 weeks before: 20 April
6 weeks before: 6 April
8 weeks before: 23 March

I never leave the grow light on for 24 hours, but I don't time it either. One thing that is important is to have the grow light as close as possible to your plants, - almost touching them. It won't hurt if a few leaves touch the light. This will prevent leggy-ness. If the light isn't adjustable height, you can stack a bunch of stuff under the plants. Also, I think that the sun is stronger than the grow lights, so on sunny days, I move my seedlings to a large south-facing window, which may or may not be practical, depending on your windows. Try to resist the temptation to start things too early. Peppers and tomatoes do best if they have buds, but not open flowers. I use a starting mix that has some nutrients in it, but after the first true leaves arrive, I give them a little diluted fertilizer water once in a while. I love gardening! Starting all your own seeds can get a little crazy if you have a big garden, but I like having that little spring jungle in my windows! Have fun.

Yes Joanie -- Jamison and his wife and a couple of others really wanted to start this month and since we started on the 4th I figured it wouldn't hurt -- so I spoke with Louise and she said she didn't see a problem with it ----- so it's a go ! Sorry for the confusion but hope to see you there !! The reply so far has been good and we have been posting and spreading the word about this sunday . With all this sunshine people are feeling spring !! Louise is currently trying to get TSC to put a sign in that they can post and change as things are happening there -- but until then we are ok to put a sign at the base of entrance -- that we will put up and take down before and after each swap -- that should let the people know that are going by that there is something going on --- Again sorry for the confussion -- it is a last min. decission and I hope to see you and Ryan there ~~~~ Tammy

03-13-2012. If you live in Windham, Maine and you want to have chickens (legally) in areas zoned residential, please come to the Town Council meeting tonight at 7pm. The Land Use Ordinance Committee has recommended they NOT expand the areas allowing more than ONE chicken. But they have written very reasonable regulations to be adopted, if the Town Council decides to go ahead and expand the areas allowed to have chickens.

i leave my lights on for 16 to 18 hours a day and run a small fan on low it helps to stremgthen the plant stems up like the wind does when they grow outside and i keep the lights almost touching the tops of the plants that way they arent reaching for the light i hope this helps you out some just make sure that you water them everyday with the fan going it does tends to dry them out a little faster ive got strawberry plants comming in this year im putting them in some raised beds frend of mines grandparents owns adams strawberry farm and hes getting me a bunch of the left over plants after they replant he said they always have plenty
