I agree on all counts. I ended up with about ten chicks, two roosters and ten ducks. All are doing great. The orp roo has taken a shine to the three golden comet pullets since I had to put him in with them. The breda roo is sharing quarters with the ducks until i can finish the new pens. Glad I had the horse trailer to be used as temporary housing. I think the ducks are comfortable enough since they have started laying. Ten eggs in the past two days.

Yes, those ducks are great layers. That was the extra orp roo so I am sure he is happy to have some girls, he's been a bachelor for a couple weeks...

and for those of you that ask where his beard is, poor guy had 20+ hens and I didn't know who was plucking his beard

He lets his girls abuse him.


I do have a question. I had chickens for 3 years before I had any of them molt, and the ones that did weren't even a year old. Yes, my hens feathers replace themselves but last year I had a whole coop practically go bald and then they were covered in pin feathers and since then only one other hen has done that. My orps seem to "fill in" a lot slower than others that hatch at the same time as me, from the same stock, but the only difference is the temps they are raised

My Julie(bama) orps took almost a year to fill out but I have seen others that live down south that has stock from the same lines and theirs look so full so much earlier. I also noticed it on my ameraucana. I was looking at pics of others birds and while mine are still fuzzy, theirs are almost fully feathered....the situation perplexes me because I would think the opposite would happen, no?

maybe it's because I just throw the whole thing off because I leave mine indoors much longer than others?

not sure if I mentioned it, but dh also found out that we can have unlimited birds under 6 months old. Dh told the woman at town hall that if the neighbors really wanted to be jerks we would grow out 50 cockerals....could you imagine how much noise that many 5 months old cockerals would make? She kindly asked him not to, he told her he was making a point, that he wouldn't really do it.....

I have 12 roosters right now and the noise is pretty bad. I'm lucky so far that I've kept up dialogue with my neighbors so they know they're not permanent residents. They'll probably be going in about 10 days or so, but then I have another round of roosters to come outside and grow out.

I have 12 roos (did I really say that??) and hardly a peep from most of them. now my neighbor has 3 that go off all the time. thankfully not all of those roos are staying.
anyone need a roo? didn't think so.

Sadly, today is rooster cull day. We don't eat them so it is such a waste . I feel better though knowing they go humanely, dh talks to them and pets them on the way over, he is such a good guy. He doesn't like to do it but does for me. I think the only roo I won't be able to cull is the cream legbar, so pretty and nice.... will have to find a home for him. The silver laced Brahma boys are so laid back, but loud.....so I know dh feels really bad for them because he has delayed them for over a week now. Now we are down to the wire. Gotta figure out where these last hens will be going so we can deconstruct the coops and get the remaining residents moved.

No one taking any?? Not for food even? I'd take them for food... but if DH processes them that would be easier for me because of the baby. Got up at 4am to do one roo this week-- the one your roo replaced. Yours are too pretty and too nice.

Turkens are all chicken (ie not a hybrid), lay a normal sized chicken egg, and have a naked neck (and a few areas of slightly naked but you can't really tell). They're sweet and good layers. They do awesome in the heat, they're fine in the cold and they're friendly. If you eat your roosters they're easier to pluck and make a nice sized carcass.
I have a bunch of turkens and love them a lot.

all birds are hybrids of one sort unless they are the original jungle fowl just some have been bred for so many yrs we don't think of them as hybrids anymore.
