I think I need to get myself a truck or minivan so I can start selling birds at these shows again - probably next Spring. My little blue car is TOO small. Even in the chicken business - size matters!!!

and did you see, you might have been gone by then, the salmon fav on the end by the silkies had a for sale sign on them.

It was my kids who wouldn't stop saying, "can we have one of those? Buy this and one of these! Ooh, these are for sale!" They are terrible. Actually, they were mostly well behaved. I am glad I can take them and have them see and listen and hopefully learn. I had hoped they would pay more attention during the judging but they were so dizzy with all the birds. I asked them what birds they remembered liking. My son says any blue bird is great and Guinea Hens of all things. (and he still likes turkeys, uck.) She had to like a pigeon!! Oh jeez. To her credit she did like the cute German Owls. I did too but won't be eating those so they stay in the cute displays owned by someone else. I wish I had gotten the name of the one of the men on the sale lawn. Nice guy with some big Black Cochins. I don't know that I want SF bantams. I thought maybe but having seen them I am still thinking they are too small to be worth the time of slaughtering. I liked the Cornish bantams. I could see the meat on them. It would still take two or three at a time to feed us a meal (five of us here plus the dog and eventually baby makes six). In the long run its probably going to be ducks and Marans. Can't say enough good about these Marans I have.

I don't know the person's name (my partner bought and hatched the eggs this past summer), but I know she has a home here in Maine also and my partner found her on this message board so it must be Keesmom, like Hoppy says.

Well, that does sound like her but I would have to confirm that. Pictures are helpful. Your stock is still young then. Are you showing anywhere else?

I don't know the person's name (my partner bought and hatched the eggs this past summer), but I know she has a home here in Maine also and my partner found her on this message board so it must be Keesmom, like Hoppy says. There is also a guy I met at the Cumberland Fair who breeds Salmon Favs (not that I am recommending him, mind you) .I want to say he was from Windham maybe? Somewhere out that way. Said he has 600 chickens and has been breeding for 20 years.

If he was at the Cumberland fair and from Windham most likely Grant's Game bird Farm on River rd in Windham. The cumberland fair gives birds blue ribbons that should be DQ.

Chickemagnet- did you make the show yesterday? I only saw a few Heritage RIR and only one was being shown by a junior.

VioletBlue- maybe you remember who you got your birds from? I would like to know more about them and what your turn out was etc. I have LF SF here but only pullets at this time. Would love to see pics of your birds!

I did get them from Keesmom. They are beautiful, I had a wonderful hatch, healthy birds, and I am impressed with their quality. I am still going through them to see who to breed. I haven't shown any of them yet either. I am having issues with posting pictures, I will try though.

Can you tell what kind of day I've had? Got home about 30 minutes ago and the town's ACO pulled in the driveway. Yet again some wonderful, upstanding and highly moronic neighbor had to call him. Why? Because my horses' paddock is muddy and their shelter isn't tall enough. He took a look around and also brought a horseman with him to get a second opinion. Conclusion? Of course it is muddy since we have had a few days of rain. And the shelter is three sided with a roof and all three horses can fit in comfortably. All three horses look well taken care of and I seem to know what I am doing. So both the ACO and the other gentleman had absolutely no issues whatsoever. But the neighbor has threatened to take it up the chain to Animal Welfare if the ACO doesn't do something. Boy do I really really hate people sometimes. Even the horse guy said it is probably someone who knows nothing and won't be happy until I bring the horses in the house at night and put blankets on them as soon as the temperature gets below 60 plus build a barn with satellite tv and internet access for them.

So tomorrow I am being proactive and calling the state to explain the situation. If they want to send an agent out then I will be happy to meet them and talk to them. I would rather do that than to be surprised with a note on the door some afternoon saying they had been here.

How did they do? How many other LF RIR were there? Any other stand outs?

This sounds like a really good idea. I would also make a nice call to the town office letting them know much you appreciated the professional and courteous manner the ACO and other person handled the embarassing situation. Feedback makes them your allies in a memorable way that most people won't go out of their way to do but which establishes you as an involved citizen they can communicate with.

Good idea. It is just so frustrating. My animals have and always will come first. They get medical care before I do. I buy food for them before I buy my own. And to have some 'concerned' person try and get me in trouble just makes me so angry, mad, irritated and just plain discouraged.
