I would like to make a nipple waterer for my four new chicks. Has anyone done This? I have one in my coop for my other chickens and love it. I bought it. I would love to start my new chicks off early and not have the mess .

I used a sterilite 1 gallon pitcher from WalMart and installed 2 horizontal nipple waterers. I placed it on a brick and elevated it as they grew. But I did keep the chick waterer in for a few weeks until I was sure all were using the nipple waterer. Some of them wouldn't attempt using it until they were a couple weeks old, others began within the first week. I think this is a good way to get them used to using a bucket waterer, since that's all I use in the coop/run area.

All mine including the ducks and turkeys took to it literally within minutes.

That makes life easy - but some of my littlest chicks didn't quite have the strength to push in the silver part repeatedly. That's why I left the chick waterer for them. But by the time they went outside at 3 weeks of age, all were using the waterer without fail.

Here's mine. It's height-adjustable so I can keep raising it as they grow. I start my chicks with this and they've all used it, no issues.

Vertical nipples can make more of a mess than a open waterer.
But then I strongly dislike VN's...because of the mess they make.
Now, now, just because you bought cheap nipples... Should have ordered from Neil Grassbaugh. Whatever happened to him, anyway? I need some new gaskets for some old nipples.

Never heard of him.
What gaskets?
They leak where the pin is supposed to seal the flow...if they aren't hung plumb or a tiny piece of detritus gets in there they don't seal.
Thread seals are another issue altogether.

The other reason I dislike them is you can't set the vessel down.
HN's are much easier and they don't freeze.
