Making some progress on our coop addition

Actually, we call it a "chuck house" instead of a coop (chicken/duck house).

The original part was 6x8 foot. The addition is 12x16 foot. Tomorrow (if the rain holds off) I will start on the roof trusses/rafters.

The hard part is going to be matching the roof pitch of the existing part.

I will try to update with more pics as we get more done.

Oh, and the pile of lumber is a pole barn we took down from someone else's property and will also be putting that back together this spring. And the limbs and branches are from 2 trees that had to come down to make way for these projects, but is also next winters firewood.

If I keep getting more chickens, ducks, and geese, that is probably going to be my house also when my husband kicks me out. OR, his house when he tries to kick me out.

Matching the angle. I had built the first one not really knowing what I was doing, so the pitch isn't really a standard size. It is 7/12 pitch.

I am going to need to temporarily brace the ridgeboard (the main top roof board) and try different heights on it to get the angle I need.

I read a lot of books about doing this, but none tell me how high the ridgeboard needs to be to get a certain pitch with a certain width house. Besides, math totally escapes me.

Ha! Ha! You had virtually the same size coop I started off with and I was going to just put an addition on, also. My new coop is almost the size of your addition! That is so funny! I guess a lot of us end up in the same boat!

In just 2 days we made a little more progress.

The roof rafters are up:

The one thing the pics don't show is that 3/4 of the sheathing (OSB/Partical board) is up on the roof now also. It shows a couple pieces on the last pic, but more were added after that was taken.

DH is handling most of the roof work, and the rest we have been doing as a team. He just gets a little frustrated because most of the plans for the building are in my head. I think it through as I go (and for months before starting). So, I know what is supposed to happen but trying to explain it to others is a different story.
