Wow! Blue is soooo similar to Napoleon, but a bit darker. (There is a pick of him on Feathersite under Seramas somewhere) Ill have to look up a picture later to compare. Ill have to see where Blue came from, lol.. I always loved those cool hackle feathers!

I'll have to get a better pic of him in the sunlight.. his feathers have a green tint to them.. for some reason he looks all black in this one.

Well last night we went to the barn around 10 pm to put sheets on the horses. As I walk in I hear very unusual crying coming from one of the serama pens. To my surprise my hen with week old chicks has just up and decided she was done being a mommy and going to take care of herself. She was cuddled up to her man on the perch and all three babies were down on the floor stressfully crying and frantically trying to find a way up to that perch with mom.

I swooped them up and brought them into the brooder with a few orps that hatched just about the same time. This morning everyone seems very content, warm and bellies full.

It just goes to show that you really never know with chickens.

Today I lost my very first serama to a hawk. My dearest sweet ebony is gone forever

The 3 years I have kept seramas I free ranged them with no losses until today. They have been my best predator savvy birds thus far. I expect a few looses every now and then but I took this one personal. It's always your best darn hens

She was such a gorgeous girl, very unique chocolate brown chick who matured into this little black beauty. I am gonna miss her so much

Please hang in there and I said a little prayer for Ebony.

Thanks so much guys. Just goes to show ya your luck runs out eventually when you let them have their freedom. I am gonna have to start thinking long and hard about this whole free range thing with them I think. What a shock it will be for them to have all that taken away

I would LOVE to let my free range but the thought of having what happen to you today is just to difficult for me to even want to face. Again, I am so sorry about what happen. We have a pair of red tail hawks that live right across the street (no free meals here!) so even on the big bird pen we have netting. My serama's do have nice indoor pens in the barn and I just glorify them with an abundance of goodies to make up for not being able to free range.

I am constantly worrying about hawks here when my birds free-range...they enjoy it so! Hawks don't even have to be good at what they do, since seramas are so small! Just try and keep in mind, it's all part of nature, and you gave her a wonderful time here on earth!

But, netting might be a good idea, if you can swing it...

Thanks guys, fortunately they have a covered run chain link dog kennel with a kennel panel over the top, I just have to be strict on keeping them in it now. I just usually let them out in the morning to roam the fenced in back yard. There are TONS of trees and bushes to hide in around here whic I think has gotten them this far but Ebony is lead hen and if a bird is screaming (usually because I am trying to catch them) SHe comes running and backs down to nothing. I wouldn't doubt that hawk went after another bird but Ebony stepped up to protect her buddies. This hawk has been hanging around all summer and got an ee hen of mine about 2 months ago.. you would think I had learned my lesson but nope they break my heart begging at the door to let them out and I usually give in.
