All three of my hens are back in production again after a month of rest on maternity.

I did not expect them to start so soon.

I'm getting one or two eggs a day with a few exceptions out of a couple of nice B sized hens and I have a few in the incubator due to hatch at different times. I have another incubator I use for hatching them out so I can move the ones that are ready for lockdown to that one and still have the others in the turner. I have one hen that is a small A and she has laid but she's very sporadic. I have mine paired so I may put another hen with her and her rooster if she's not going to be a routine layer. I bought a pair from Jerry's that should ship tomorrow and be here on Tuesday. I have no idea what color I'm getting so it's going to be pretty fun to see what I get.
There is an SCNA show in Cape Girardeau, Mo. in April, 2011. I will be there and will show for my first time so I'm getting pretty excited, anyone here planning to go?

My husband and I are going to the show in Shawnee this weekend too. Anyone been there before or planning to go? It would be fun to meet up with a few other breeders to say hello at least.

I'll post if and when I get some hatched. It's been frigid off and on here so even when I go right out to get them after work, I'm always concerned they got too cold. I don't have a thermometer in the building yet but it's not insulated and I have 2 different heat lamps on. The water never freezes so I'm thinking they should be okay. I'm still working on it. I have a pretty cute set up and they will have a real door soon to replace the heavy plastic over the doorway and we're putting a window in for milder days. When I have it more presentable looking and organized, I'll post photo's.

I have some questions for you all.

Most websites claim that an A size serama really does not breed, due to size and muscle etc. Yet I see alot of people saying they have hatches from A size hens. So they can breed? What about the A roosters...are they fertile? I have some Cs and bigger. I have hatched some and obviously they do not breed true to size. Some are so tiny. I am waiting to see how they turn out, then will sell off the bigger one. Any info would be appreciated.

I know Grady Taylor has micro, which is even smaller than A and he hatches them, naturally or in the incubator, A size seramas breed, are fertile, and hatch the own eggs without many problems. Yes smaller eggs, less eggs, and some will die from being so itty bitty, but I have seem it with my own eyes and that is a false statement.

Well I don't know about others but for me yes size A's do breed. I have three almost three week olds in my bator right now from my A hen. I know she is an A as I have weighed everyone here and have A's, B's and C's. Her chicks are very tiny, one seems to be catching up a bit with the others and do believe it to be a cockerel. The other two are still smaller and not showing what they are yet. But to answer your question, it is possible for an A to breed, be fertile and give life!

A size birds can reproduce but a majority of them are infertile. They are also prone to health problems with their chicks. This is why the standard is being set for a minimum and maximum weight for the American Serama. Nothing against the smaller birds if that's what you like, just a step to improve the overall vigor of the breed.

I need good hatching vibes! My Serama hen decided to lay a few more eggs in November. I put them in the incubator (in groups this time) and the first set of 4 are due to hatch in the next couple of days. I've never tried hatching anything this late in the year before; I'm a little worried that I may have been keeping the humidity too high.

Of course there are A sized that are fertile, it's just that the most productive are the larger Serama's. I always say, never say never. It's kind of like a test at school, if there is an answer of A) Never B) Some of the time and C) Always, then you can bet that B is the answer.....at least most of the time,

My smallest hen is a small A. She rarely lays and I've only hatched a couple of them. One was super teeny and only lived 4 months and he was still only an ounce at that age. I use my husbands certified scales he uses for work and they are accurate/digital and can weigh in ounces/pounds or Kg/G's so I know it was accurate. He was 0.5 ounces at 2 months old. I named him Uno, he was not a strong chick but was never sick. I found him dead in his cage one morning. He would definitely have remained a house pet. I am hoping little miss Dovey will lay again soon. She has very nice type and she's still young, about 18 months. I worry for her too since I've also read that the smaller ones "sometimes" can have a shorter than average life span. This isn't the case for all of them though.

Anybody have any eggs for sale? I'm trying to do a hatch for New Year's Day, so I would need to receive them by the end of the week. Just thought I'd ask! Of course, mine have all stopped laying.

If anyone had and BLACK serama eggs, I would be a happy fella.

Shoot me a PM if you have something available!
Thanks
