I'm kinda new with Seramas but I'll try and answer your question. Jerry hatches a lot of birds and gives a lot of birds away that he considers too good to kill...or as he would put it "feed them to the gators"...lolol
These birds are carrying the same genes as all his birds and some people get their start breeding those, cull heavy and breed the best to the best to improve them. As for the standing straight, that's one of the things everyone breeds for. It's a natural pose but they're also worked with and trained to hold that pose for showing tabletop.
The little red hen I had could stand up straight but wouldn't while I was taking the photos..lolol...That happens a lot, so that's another reason you may not be seeing them stand up straight.

There always seems to be more cockerels hatch than pullets and you can get some very good cockerels from him just for the cost of shipping. He has some project cockerels now I wish I could get....blue, barred , crele, cuckoo, combos.
Check out the forum on SCNA. It has a lot of information and you can see pics of pet and show Seramas.

Thanks!
I was looking at ordering fertile eggs. I do know that not alot will hatch but if I order say 6 or 8 how many do you think would actually hatch?

Thanks Again

I've never tried hatching eggs that have been shipped but from what others have said it all depends on how the PO handles them...or scrambles them.....you may get a few to hatch or none. It may not be as much fun as hatching them but I think in the long run it would probably be cheaper just getting a good pair and you would also know what you're getting.

As for hatching shipped eggs...sometimes it can be very successful. I got 18 eggs from Patrick of Bluegrass Seramas. 16 were developing and I ended up hatching 11 healthy chicks.

The reasons for a successful hatch I believe were: The eggs were shipped from Kentucky to North Carolina (not too far) when the weather was cool. The packing was excellent and they were incubated under two broodies. Also his hens are very well cared for with excellent nutrition making for viable eggs.

The funny thing is that I don't think mbrobbins has any all-black birds, I'd love to know where these guys came from

With the genetics on these little ones.... it's back there somewhere...

Hi Shelley
I came across this thread and wanted to let you know I do have 3 black hens (I had 4 but one died 2 wks ago during a cold snap
sad.png

I have a black and white mottled roo that came from a pair that was purchased from Pa., I have a choco&White roo and black tailed red from Grady Taylor's stock (Marianna , FLa)
I have a BBR roo from Maureen Broderick (a member of the SCNA)and my original stock of 11 came from Ky that I bought off eggbid. My original roos have been sold since, and now I'm trying to breed for more typey and smaller birds. I LOVE THE BLACKS! I know someone that is wanting a black hen also. I like to introduce new bloodllines to my stock every year.
The chicks will get prettier as they age, at least all of mine have.

LMAO...I wish I knew!!! Just getting Bo not to fly off has been a challenge. He has now discovered the ladies and rather visit them....now he doesn't want to stay on the table.

I'm glad someone came along that's had some experence. Patrick does have beautiful healthy birds. Fritz goes back to his line if I'm not mistaken.

Here's his site...BluegrassBantams

Juliette also told me that a lot of people have had good luck with the eggs she's shipped too. I just live too far from everyone!!

I forgot to add, Julette lives in SC.

Yes, they go broody...usually when you don't want them too.
