I didn't know that they are getting into the color 'thing' so harsh?? I DO think they have to have a 'color standard' to get them into the APA or ABA (I think thats the correct lettering) don't they? I love all the different colors and patterns and like to play with the color genetics of all our birds, but the Serama's colors (from what I understand) are still so genetically mixed up that it's still hard to come up with a 'single' color or pattern. They have gotten the white and black solids but further than that I'm not sure of any others. I DO tho' want to see a lavender!!
These birds are so much fun and so full of personality, that I cannot see where one would be 'bad' color. Maybe bad typey but not color UNLESS someone is going for a certain genetic color trait and one is not of that requested set. That doesn't mean that it's a cull or bad bird, just not what floats their proverbial color boat!!

One man's junk is another man's treasure!! There are some 'cull's' out there that I would dearly LOVE to have just because of their lines and what the owners are working on within the lines!! (cuts a look at Bluegrass

This is true we are working on getting our colors down pat and trying to vear away from the Serama color/patterns for the time being! But we arent just throwing them out as we will continue our Table top judging just like we have where these off colors/patterns can take champion/res. of show(table top). To be honest the reason that we are focusing on our main ABA\\APA colors is because we know that these two clubs arent going to accept every color we put infront of them, and the already accepted colors is our best bet to get in! And really our whites and black arent even breeding 100% true yet, no ones is!
The whites will sometimes throw some with DUN lacing or speckling in them and the Blacks are having silver, gold, and red hackles and saddle feathers out the wazue! All that we are trying to do is get this breed in the standard after that were clear, we dont have to focus as much on these colors as we did to get them perfected! we will be working on type and that comes with time!

But all in all we arent trying to get rid of the colors just trying to focus on our whites and blacks and getting them in the standard, while pushing the colors aside FOR NOW!

I am gonna have seramas, and old english...both good natured breeds of birds...

As long as you can still raise yours as any color and show them in the all Serama shows or just keep them for your pleasure then the ones working to standardize the breed shouldn't bother anyone. All they're trying to do is bring the breed into the mainstream shows, the APA etc. I've never been one to tell anyone else how to breed their birds so I can't see why there is such bickering about whether to keep the breed as mixed colors as they are now or to work on standardizing them as long as type, size and temperament remain a priority. Even the breeders who prefer the mixed colors are breeding for something, right? We all have a right to focus on our own projects. If breeding for standardizing the colors will ruin the type, size and temperament, I would simply avoid buying any of those birds. Simply having them breed true to color won't ruin the other things about the breed if done carefully.

I am so excited, one of my young Serama's, one I actually bred and hatched, is laying now. I put 3 of her first eggs under another hen and one of them candled "good". due to hatch Tuesday if it's going to hatch. She's 6 months old now and such a pretty hen. Here she is at 4 months old, she wouldn't set up right for me, too busy looking over the edge of the table. She looks better when she shos off for me. I've found my hens are not nearly as interested in posing as my roosters. She was A sized then but I haven't weighed her since she matured more. The rooster is an A size and very typey but his legs are paler than hers. I can't wait to see if her first egg hatches, it was smaller than the one she came out of and her mother was a B size.

Oh boy!!! Is she one of the ones that you were telling me about by email?? Silly birds, we found out that our lil' hens are super inquisitive when outside and pose soooo pretty when one of the LF pullets come over to investigate. Sandy acts like she could just tear em' up, it would look like an ant on an elephant's back and we cannot help but laughin at her.
Keep us posted on your hatch, I'm super excited for you!!!!

Hello All,
I am new to Seramas and I was wondering if anyone can tell me how I can tell the difference between 3 week old Seramas and OEGBs that were hatched together. I was going to keep both but then decided to give my neighbor the OEGBs. The OEGBs are a mixed lot so I can't go by color.
Thanks for your help.
