--Good advice from chickenaddict--
if I have a questionable hen, they have never been opposed to coming in for a soak and sitting on my lap for some extra cuddle time... I also found a little olive oil helps too..

PhiladelphiaPhlock,
You're question was really timed right. I came home from work tonight, got supper started and left my husband to finish it then went out at the usual time to do chores and found my youngest Serama hen puffed up, setting in a nest box making some weird, uncomfortable sounds. Her feathers were fluffed up all over, she looked like a frizzled and she's not.

I instinctively picked her up and talked soothingly to her and turned to look at her behind and sure enough, it was poking out a little but would go back in, then out a little. I held her with a hand between the legs, supporting her like I would normally do and I think it was the pressure of her body weight on my hand but it shot out and landed on the floor. Wow, close call. She has been laying about 1100 in the morning, I hate to think of her feeling bad that long but not much I could have done. Sometimes I go out and look them all over before coming back inside to get dinner going. I will be making rounds as soon as I get home from now on. It just takes a few minutes.

I was trying to remember what I'd read about what to do but it was resolved before I could do anything. I've never had this happen before so I'm still breathing a sigh of relief. Her name is CeeCee and she is doing just fine now. I had given them a little oyster shell in addition to the laying crumbles. I'm wondering if that could have contributed? The crumbles are a complete feed so I may still add greens and vitamins, but I don't think I'll be giving her any extra calcium again.

I wasn't home enough today to really follow up with the pullet. I'll examine her again in the morning. She's a new layer, so she never lays in same place twice. The serama eggs seem so large compared to their bodies! Maybe it's not a surprise they have trouble passing one sometimes. If she still seems distressed, I'll try the warm water, olive oil thing. I'm glad yours resolved her issue for you!

I had a second pullet start laying yesterday. The tiniest little narrow egg. Even it had some blood on it. Poor things. I guess their bodies to adapt over time...

My little buddy Peanut is 1 year old today. He has a frame as broad as a Turkey
and I'm breeding him with another little fluffball to try and bring out the Ball body style.

I weighed him today and he is 10.0 ounces. He's a great breeder for being only 1 ounce bigger than a Micro.

What I thought to be serama eggs turned out to be old english bb reds. I forgot that my hubby threw in a few of his birds eggs along with my serama eggs, and none of them were marked. I am so heart broken.

Thanks Kellie.

Yeah Bluegrass, your Tribble has definitely got some Ball Serama genes.
I'm hoping that the less constricting round body type might allow us to develop fertile birds that are very tiny.

Have we discussed the creeper gene yet? I am getting a cockerel tomorrow with that trait, and i know nothing about it. I thought it was lethal, that they didn't live, so I never paid attention. This boy is two months old though. Is it just short legs? My birds have such long wings that they don't need short legs, but maybe he'll be charming enough that he'll make up for "shortcomings". He is from Royal, the cock that I most regret selling, so I'd kinda like to have the boy, but I don't know what a creeper gene does. Anybody have one?
