NOT crossed with a silkie...it is a regular serama with a "hook-less" feather...i.e. silkied.

We have to have our blacks completed before the lavender Serama can be worked on! I think outcrossing may have to be done to get the gene in just like every other breed. Id say it wont be long though

Hi folks,

I haven't posted here in quite a while, but I read the thread frequently...some of you I know from other forums. This thread was of special interest to me so I wanted to jump in. Here are some pic's I have...

I have several F2 chicks (grandchicks) from the line. They are various forms of blue...also a splash, and some I believe to be lavendar. They are still young, but I will post photos of them later to get your opinions of what they are...I'm off work now, so its TIME TO GO HOME...I'll be back tomarrow.

June-

I love these two!!! Did they both come from black parents? They are adorable! I am working on introducing blue and chocolate into my silkieds...call me a Color Junkie!!

Her name is "Bad Girl", she is one of my favorites. I have to go off line now....just when I am really interested in something!!! I'll be back tomarrow.

I wouldn't mind having some eggs/chicks from her!

ok thank you i couldnt figure out how they could still be a serama if they were crossed with something else.

Self blue most certainly is lavender, it's the same exact gene in every breed, they just call it differently.

The silkied seramas are just a mutation. Someone bred some that happened to have silkied feathers and went with it. If they were crossed with silkies they would be much bigger, darker skinned, feather legged, etc, etc. It would take a very long time to get rid of all the unwanted Silkie traits.

here is pictures of Silkied Serama chicks

from this smooth feather pair i get about 20% silkied from them. and yes Lavender and Self Blue are in fact the same !!!

How is everyone's Seramas handling the cold?

I'm worried about mine, especially the chicks. I have 9 chicks that are 7 weeks old. They are with broodies. It got down to 16 last night and the high today will be 30, and tonight the low will be 13. If they make it tonight, I will be in the clear.

I have insulated their coop and put plastic on the run to block the wind. I choose not to provide heat, thinking it will do more harm than good.

Oh my goodness, how are they? It was 7* here last night, and I couldn't wait to get home from work to bring the chicklets inside. I'm now building a corral in the basement to keep them in. Probably don't have to take such measures, but I have a porcelain Silkie that I CANNOT lose. I have a Cochin hen that has been broody for months, and I am tempted to just let her sit there. 14 eggs in the incubator, but I'm concerned that the chicks would have no business in zero degree weather. Anyone have newborns outside?
