Male Duck Mating with Chicken Hens

We have seven female chickens and two roos.

We also have one female duck and one drake.

They all live together in the same coop/run.

Two of the chicken hens were raised with the two ducks. (all born on the same day, shared a brooder, etc)

NOW the male duck has come of age and he loves to mount the female duck when they are IN the water. But on land, he is mounting the two easter eggers he was raised with.

He also is at times not nice (not overly mean, but is either trying to mount of fight? the roosters) The other hens he leaves alone.

Is there something that can be done, or do I need to get rid of the drake?

If I got rid of him, would the female duck be too lonely (as the only duck in the coop?)

Would the female duck still lay eggs without him around?

Can a duck mate with a chicken successfully?

I don't want to get more female ducks because to be honest these two have DISTROYED the chicken's coop/run and they are messy/stinky birds. They dirty up the chicken's drinking water in a flash. I love watching these two, but not really intersted in getting more at this time.

Do male ducks and chickens compete for ladies generally?

Roosters do not have a sexual organ ducks do. A drake breeding your hens can possibly cause them to prolapse or to become infected. Separate him from the hens as soon as is possible before they are either injured or killed.

X2 you need to rehome your duck. Ducks need at least one duck companion or they can suffer depression and die. Possibly you could rehome the female and male duck together???? That would be the best option.

Since your duck hen was raised with the chickens, she might have few problems adjusting to life without the drake. If they appear to have developed a pair bond, she would be better off rehomed along with him.

yeah, they are tight, the male and female. We are keeping them separate right now, but we can't do this forever, so I guess I need to work on finding a good home for them, not sure how to go about that? But will work on it.

Is it possible to give the ducks their own little coop and run? Maybe a small run with a kiddie pool and a dog house for them to snuggle in.

You can try rehoming them on CL. I see them all the time on our CL.

Right now, I've let the ducks have the outside run and a dog house with a kiddy pool. The chickens have the coop and I've opened the back door so they can get out into our children's play yard. BUT the kids won't play in the play yard, because the chickens are pooping on their swings, slides, sand box, etc. So this is a temp situation until we can re-home the duck pair.

What type of ducks and chickens do you have?

Black Swedish

The male looks mostly black/green and the female is black with the white chest.

The female had a big poof on her head, but since the male has been mating her, that poof is nearly gone.

We are in the central coast (California) if anyone would like to give them a good home.
