You're correct on your thinking to pick the blander colored birds. In chickens, males are bright, flashy, colorful, etc. Their color is designed to draw attention, to say "Loot at me! Here I am!!".
Females, on the other hand, are drab, blander colored, the colors are more even and smooth. They're designed to blend in and let the eye pass over them when they're setting on a nest..."You don't see anything here worth eating".

this is an easy way to sex mixed breed birds by color.

Thank you so much everyone for helping me out. This will definitely be my last time picking out the lovely colored birds. My 2 month old cockerel and little Penguin are the best of buds so I'll probably just make them there own little bachelor pad.

It's also hard to tell based on their age. If they're 10 weeks old they're definitely all hens. But any lower then 6 is questionable.

Hens. Not sure the age but with no waddle formation and very light colored comb/small comb, seems like they're females.

I was starting to think that they are roosters coz there getting bigger than usual.
They are about 13 to 14 weeks old

Maybe the breed just matures faster, or maybe time just flys by. 14-15 weeks old and those are definitely hens. No worries.

I have two chickens that are about 2 and a half months old now and I started hearing crowing from the every morning, but this morning I took a look and noticed that indeed BOTH are crowing, I didn't think both were roosters. Please let me know if anyone could suggest something. It could also be, as I've read elsewhere, that at times a dominating hen will crow as well, but it sounds that she crows better than the rooster! I won't tell him I said that...lol



This white one is the one I'm basically sure is a rooster, not the one I'm doubting about.



This brown one on the other hand was a hen, I thought...maybe I'm wrong? It crows nicely...here's another one-
