MALLARD THREAD...not rouens, Mallards!

AI rarely kills waterfowl, they are carriers of the virus. Unless you have them in an enclosed area they can get AI.
AI will kill the chickens in a couple days but the Mallards will look fine.

@ MrChickMagnet, welcome to BYC. You have came to the right site, for there is allot of knowledge available. Everyone does the best they know how and we all make our own choices to keep our chickens and ducks healthy.

Ducks are considered the pigs of the bird`s. Duck owners really have to love their ducks to put up with their mess.
Your chickens will not have clean water to drink if there is a duck in their pen.
On the other note, ducks are more parasite resistant where as chickens may have mites in their coop.
I love chickens and I love Ducks but I would not house them together. This is a great site to begin your crash course .
That is what I have been doing for the last 3 months.

I keep my chickens and ducks together, however the chickens water and feed is separate from the ducks. I have three bantams, and they are perfectly happy and healthy with my ducks. I know in large groups its not ideal, but when you have only a couple ducks or a couple chickens it isn't harmful. However, if you have a couple ducks in with your flock of chickens you will need a waterer that is duck-proof.

This is Adaline, she was just finishing her molt in this picture so she doesn't look her best.

Your Adaline is beautiful!

And she looks like a total sweetheart, Adaline looks curious and a bit wary, just like Junior

There are always sports white and dark or black but Jr came out with excellent type and color. When the Mallards all look alike you need numbered bands. Lol

I really should have given them leg bands. The drakes look so much alike, both my drakes left at some point and although Cobra came home, I'm not sure about the other one.



This is the fattest duck I've seen around, he waggles funny because of his foot. He loves food, he's really cheeky too.

I've got three mallards mixed in with my flock, a drake and two females.

I've also got four mallard mixes. They're all lined up in the photo below (and photo bombed by one of the mallard girls, facepalm) the order is: mallard/pekin, mallard/WH, mallard/runner and mallard/runner.
