Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

Has anyone ever tried putting a baby chick under a hen (a hen who wasn't broody, but has been in the past)??
I wouldn't. As others said it is much more likely to end up in the chick being killed than adopted.

And you can't put a chick under a non broody hen, unless you let them sleep in the nest boxes (not the best idea, they poop at night). There are "I'm hatching eggs" and "I hatched eggs and am raising chicks" hormones that a non broody won't have. And when they are done, at least in my limited experience of two batches, they are done NOW! Light switch from mothering and protecting to "MY food" "MY place on the roost".

Now it is POSSIBLE a hen will decide on her own to start mothering chicks but it has to be her idea.

as most of you on this thread seem to be well versed in all things chicken.... could i ask you to look at a thread i just posted - i was asking about a crusty chicken vent......there is a photo attached - I am planning on giving her a bath but not sure if i should try and pick off the scab/poo or not. I dont know if its scab or poo....
The title is "Scab or poop on vent"
Thanks for chiming in with opinions....

Chicks arrived today. They already know the difference between day and night. Look at those sleepy butts. MHP is awesome.

Yes, my chick cam has night vision ;)

Awesome pic @BBZZZZTT !
Cam jely here.
Might want to lower the front of pad a tad.
Yeah the angle of the cam I think makes it look a bit higher than it is. It is 4.75" which is still more than recommended, but thats the only length of bolt I had. It's wide enough that they can all get in the back where it's lower up against the pad too. I also have a gap at the back so no one gets trapped.
Do you think that's okay? From their behavior it seems fine but I could always go to the hardware store I suppose. :p

Also- This is the camera
