Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

Agreed.

It's called a vocabulary~such a rare thing these days, apparently, to have such a thing... and I don't have a "swipe finger", as I'm typing on an "old fashioned"~and I laugh that such a thing is considered as such~

See, the weird thing is that with that particular word, i actually did knkw what it meant but in the context and partially past experiences i misread it. But i do agree i think a lot of vocabulary is lost, there's sooo many words I dont know or have no clue what they mean and don't bother to learn them if there's not a need. It's also apparently now rare to read too, which is where a ton of vocab comes from too, and I'll admit I'm guilty of not reading. I used to love it too until the Internet came along. I would like to start again though. But yeah, everyone's got smartphones these days :p i didnt for the longest time though.

ANYWAY

I agree, definitely miscommunication and let's just move on

Yes, yes, good good.

Beekissed, I know this is the wrong post to ask on, but how is your natural nest MHP incubation going? I read a lot of your thread and can't wait to try it, though I'll probably go a little less on the "natural" part. If I have a heating pad on the floor of the box, and a low MHP cave over top the eggs, and a fan circulating air, do you think that will work? Plus humidity source of course. With air circulation, I would only need a high temp of 101, right? Not a hens 105-107?

Katee says when are we getting MY gunieas

My concept One day this was still when I was intending on brooding in the house.
Of course I have changed mymind so I have to re design it some.

My grandpa was a share cropper he brooded all his chicks on Blow sand held up by corrugated tin. the heat came from underneath from Kerosine heaters.... two three hundred chicks at a time would be sprawled out on that sand napping or running aobut in the cool places playing chicken tag.

There is no one way to do it only the way that suits your needs...

I had a bad experience today.

I made the last Mama Cave using the blocks like Aart showed us. It worked great I had used the screws to adjust it about 2 1/2 inches high. I used 2x2 ( which we all know are actually 1 1/2 x 1 1/2 inches. So the screw was out about 3/4-1 inch. I had 2 chicks work their way under the block and get stuck there and die. They got their head stuck and were not smart enough to back up and get free.

I am not blaming anyone, Whenever I think I have something perfect for animals they always manage to show me I was wrong.

Just be very careful with your cave. I have had chicks bunch up and smoother under heat lamps too. It happens. I just want to warn you guys to watch for it. I rebuilt it out of wire again. I hope it is ok now.

This does not mean I am done with Aart design, I like it and am going to use it again. I am going to 1/4 inch furring strips with holes drilled in it for the screws to go through, thus eliminating the space under the block.

And because Murphy's law likes to smack me around, it had to be 2 little Cream Legbar girls instead of boys.

I am so sorry, Ralphie! There's not a thing I can say to make you feel any better, I know. We all know that those little stinkers can find a way to put their lives at risk (look at Scout, doggone it) but it's even harder to take when we think we have all the bases covered and they manage anyway. I'm more determined than ever to use @Beekissed 's method of putting the heating pad under the frame and then putting the entire frame and pad assembly inside a pillowcase or something. I think since this thread started there have now been 3 chicks lost (correct me if I'm wrong) and that's three too many. I think we had one that got caught in the wire of the frame and now yours. I feel so bad.

I know this irritated the little ones, but I did a lot of head counts lifting the MHP to peek to ensure that wasn't happening with this batch, even though it's entirely enclosed in a pillowcase. (Less worried now that they're a week old and running around so much, but I still do head counts. I'm the nervous type.). Unfortunately, they're pretty good at finding ways to get into trouble....

Sorry this happened.

Okay, Broody Brigade, listen up. You listening? Not yet? Well, I'll wait. Humm hmm hm, dee da dee dooo Oh, looks like you're ready. Now, I'm not ready to go into much detail at this point, but I'm gonna be asking you folks with lots of experience here with Mama Heating Pad to kinda take over for awhile and answer questions and such. I just got some medical news this week that I'm still trying to wrap my head around, and probably won't be on much for a bit. I'll be popping in from time to time, but until I figure out what's going on and what it's going to mean around here, I have those irons I need to tend to. I'm not dying or anything as dramatic as that, but I am looking at some real issues that need to come first.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled broadcast.....

I know they were hating me, I was looking in there and pulling them out so often to count them.. Maybe they committed suicide to get away from me.

I have rebuilt it completely. I was already using her idea of hanging the pad from the wire. That part worked great. I used crafting wire ties. I feel I am repeating myself here. I was bragging about the Mama Cave to the people on the surviving Minnesota thread so I might have told them but no one here.

Here are the pictures of how I connected it. You can see how I pushed the crafting cable ties through the material...

And here you can see how I fastened it to the wire.

That part all worked fine. The space below the block was my problem. I have fixed it so (knock on wood) nothing will happen again. Also I should let you know the chicks were just a day old. I removed them a day early from the hatcher because of a cripple I was trying to save. (splayed leg). I did not want them pecking at her. ALso if I had a larger breed it may not have happened. my Cream Legbars are pretty small at a day.
