Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

I wasn't intentionally insulting anyone, but if that's how people take certain phrases it can't be helped.  From her/his post it seemed they thought the HP would shut off automatically and they were worried about that feature.

Ahhh okay, sorry for the misunderstanding then!! Its hard to tell on the Internet :/

I think it was mostly the bolded sentence that made them think it. I think maybe it was the collection of words or phrasing that got twisted cause it's hard to tell on the Internet and if they read it fast im sure they would hsve read it as you saying something about their reading comprehension simply because those words were in there but it's not what you meant, very hard to tell on the Internet and sorry :/ i think maybe you more meant if they fully read everything? But on the Internet its easy to misread

I don't know if you read comprehensively what people are saying when they refer to an "auto off" feature.  This means the heating pad has a feature where it goes off automatically after two hours of operation....and these HPs we are using also have a feature that overrides the "auto off" feature so that the heating pad stays on continually....all the time...for months, if need be.

Unless someone lives in an area where the power goes off frequently, these HPs are not much of a risk at all.  I've used them to incubate eggs for three straight incubations in a row without any issues...then used them to brood the chicks after they hatched.

Comprehensively~ in this usage it was referring to #1...the large scope, total or fullness of the information given and not referring to one's ability to understand. Since the poster referred to the AUTO OFF feature as if it were a danger in some way.....quote: "I loved this idea but I can't stand the thought of using anything with an AUTO OFF feature - I would never sleep!".... and the chicks wouldn't be adequately kept warm due to this feature for some reason, I was thinking maybe she hadn't seen references in other posts where these HPs also had a feature that overrides the auto off feature, which should have set her mind at ease about the HP staying warm throughout the brooding time.

Quote: 2.
comprehending or thoroughly understanding with one's mind; having an extensive mental range or grasp, as of a particular subject or many subjects.
3.
Insurance. covering or providing broad protection against loss.

A persons sees insults if they look for them, I guess. The context in which I used the word "comprehensively" was appropriate for the topic of conversation and discussion at the present time.

I got the same impression from your post to me that KDOGG331 did; it seemed a trifle condescending. Do I care? Not much, but for two people who are strangers to feel the same way about words you wrote would indicate a lack of discretion on your part,
This is the last I'm prepared to comment on this.

There were also complete strangers who knew exactly what I was trying to say, Perchie and Hholly, and they didn't find it the least bit insulting but saw it for what it was...a helpful post. Helping. I know that's a new concept to some, but it's a time honored way of being friendly and generous. Sorry you didn't feel it was helpful at all and felt insulted but I can't imagine how I could have written it to help you with that.

Apparently, time was wasted all around. Can't ever get that time back, that time spent trying to help someone, but no bother...I have so much of it to give away.

Yeah, I realized once you said you didn't mean it to be insulting then i realized it, which is why i said after that maybe you meant did they read all of the posts. And why when i was first replying to theirs that there were heating pads with an auto off feature because i got the impression they didn't know there were pads like that too. I realize now you were trying to be helpful and also i saw their post first so when i read yours i think it already partly came from that negative lens since they were upset by it. Maybe if i had read both first it would have been easier.

But besides the whole "tone is hard to tell on the Internet" thing, I honestly think there may be some generational differences here or something maybe. I don't know how old everyone is but for instance I don't think the word is really used that much now or rather, it is, such as the comprehensive insurance bit, but not in the same way i guess. Plus there's also negativity with it now too. Tons of people use insults such as can you read?, did you even read it?, etc. And insults about reading comprehension even if they didn't use that exact word and for the comprehension bit, we're all about shortening **** so if people dont mean it as an insult a lot of people will just say something along the lines of are you sure you read the whole thing/read it all? Etc so when you look at it like that, it's easy to see how it could be misconstrued cause kids always use reading comprehension and similar things as insults these days. I'm not saying that it's okay or that you should use shorter words or "dumb yourself down at all, just that maybe those words aren't always used the same anymore and that it's a common insult so easy to misconstrue, especially if read fast

Lol I don't mean to stir the pot here, but you said most people would say "are you sure you read the whole thing/read it all"? Which we all, through the education of the last page of posts, now know is the very definition of "comprehensively". Maybe Beekissed was just saving her swype finger by shortening it to one word, or maybe she likes to stretch her literary muscle once in a while. Lol, I have no idea how old (or young) she is, but if there is a generational difference, I have always been of the opinion that the older generation should never have to... Ahem...stoop to the younger generation by changing how they talk. I would not have taken offense to it at all!

ANYWAY, I got my Sunbeam MHPs in the mail today and am so excited! I can't believe I have to wait almost two weeks for my chicks! This weekend I bought a new Barred Rock 4 month roo (who is already working hard trying to figure my 16 hens out) and expanded my chicken house to triple its size! The DH is already tired of chickens!

I know that's what she meant and that that is what the definition is. That was my exact point. That a lot of people now just say what I said instead of using the exact word. That was my point and why I was saying people might have gotten confused.

As for not stooping to their level, I also said that. I specifically said the below thing (bold)

"I'm not saying that it's okay or that you should use shorter words or "dumb yourself down at all, just that maybe those words aren't always used the same anymore and that it's a common insult so easy to misconstrue, especially if read fast"

Which just further shows my point, people don't take the time to fully read and understand things on the Internet and even if they do, the Internet and print form makes it really hard to tell exactly what they mean
