Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

Chicks were quiet ALL night! All 4 up and active, eating, and drinking, including "scabby navel." Cleaned up one little butt. On to Day Two!

I have 2 German Shepherds, and they are totally curious. Probably part prey drive and part curiosity. They've sniffed them in my hands and watched. I'm hoping integrating them will prevent an attack, but I also know how strong prey drive can be.

A funny this morning-well first everyone is still alive :) At 5:45 (still dark here at that time) I hear "CHEAP! CHEAP! CHEAP!" I'm like dude here we go again, thinking it was the non-eater. Since it's so dark I tucked her back under mama and just heard those sweet churring noises, went back to bed. 5 minutes later, it started again...it could be non-eater I guess although once I turned the light on a little (dimmer switch) they all came out to eat and drink and I couldn't pick her out SO I wondered if I have a roo in there, time to get up everyone! Lol! Seems early, and DARK to be waking up, but??

Also, just want to apologize for my emotional posts yesterday. I was a mess and just needed support, I didn't have much here and so that added to my feelings of being overwhelmed and sad. So thank you for allowing me to come here for support and advice, you all are amazing <3

YAY for a quiet night!! And healthy chicks!

I've wondered the same thing about our dogs, both 90 pound mutts hehe! They are very curious, as you said not sure if its prey instinct or what LOL!

You may get better info in the injuries section but it you can't feel/see anything odd when you examine the chick it may just be a minor injury that will heal with time.  I'd just keep an eye on it and make sure it's still eating, drinking and staying warm.  You may want to check the brooder and see if there is something that it might have gotten its' foot caught on but chicks can find a way to injure themselves in even the most baby proofed brooders.
it could also be a slipped tendon which needs to go back to avoid a permanent problem.

@MesMama ~ For your chick that is not eating good, have you tried giving it plain yogurt? It's easy to eat and the probiotics will be good for her/him.

I got my new pad ready yesterday. This one looks a lot like my fist one, but its a lot bigger. It's 12x24 & has no auto shut off. This large one I bought off of Amazon. It was cheaper than the smaller one I got last year.

Yes. Prey instinct is strong :)

Well she's still not eating much and doing the distress chirp thing, tried the watered down honey and she smacked her beak as I put it on there. It's so weird, she pecks at the food, like the bigger pieces and even some small ones, the big ones she drops, the smaller ones sometimes she'll eat. Even the mash doesn't really interest her much. I put her back under mama and she scooted right under and is quiet now.

So, hope this isn't a stupid question but how long can she go like this? She needs more to eat yes?

I haven't, didn't even think of yogurt, good idea! So just regular plain yogurt, not Greek right?
