Well my chicks didn't arrive today:(. I could not get the pillow case to fit securely, so I bought some clearance outdoor fabric and made a cover for the cave. I found a second heating pad that doesn't have the auto shut off, so I'll slide each heating pad into a pillow case and cover them with towels. Hopefully this contraption will do the trick now that it has 3 open sides and no sharp edges or places for a chick to get hung up. Thank you all so much for the help and great advice! I'm sure I will be asking many more questions in the days and weeks to come.

Yippee to happy healthy chicks!!

I get the idea of using a pillowcase so the chicks can't get stuck between the wire and the heating pad. But then, putting a towel on top of that - wouldn't the chicks be just as likely to get stuck between the pillowcase wrapped pad/wire and the towel?

they do crawl there but they do not get wedged in because the towel is not attached and very light wieght if you use an old towel .. they just knock the towel off

Why not do what many of us have been doing? Attach the heating pad to the bottom of the wire frame with tiny bungie cords. There's no wire exposed that way, and the chicks are snuggling against nothing but the warm, cozy surface of the heating pad. Actually I made a flannel cover for my heating pad, so I just wash the cover and not the pad when I'm done brooding my chicks. Here is my pad up ended so you can see the underside. I don't need to use a pillow case. A hand towel is draped over the top of the frame with some Glad Press 'n Seal stuck on it for easy cleaning.
