I've had younger chicks than yours out in colder weather then you are forecasted for. I think they will be fine outside tonight, but if you want to wait till morning to put them out, it's up to you.

Okay thank you! I am especially worried about my bantams. They are a lot smaller and they aren't as feathered out as the others.

It was in the 80's here today. Here's our chicks right when we brought them home at noon. My husband has placed hardware cloth all around the kennel now.

The evening is cooling down. My husbanf is putting on the last panel of hardware cloth, going to place a fleece blanket over the whole thing and into the garden shed (future coop) they go. They are all under the MHP in this picture! All 13 of them, except 3 of the 4 buff orpingtons always come out of it. Lol. There's one poking her head out.

As cruel as it sounds, I had one chick with wry neck last summer and I simply culled him. Hated to do it, but I've been through that "save a chick no matter what" stage and although Scout was special and he lived well and happily, I didn't want to do it again. He suffered, I suffered, and everyone who had to listen to me worry about him suffered. I'd rather spend my time, resources, and energy on chicks who don't need hours and hours of special attention.

BUT THAT'S ME AND I GET THAT NOT EVERYONE FEELS THAT WAY. I would have ignored all advice to cull Scout. In fact, I think I did ignore it.

Maybe I'm a coward and don't want to face the trials of trying to save chicks when the outcome is so uncertain. So while I admire those who do, it just ain't me.

I agree with you but culling is NOT for cowards, it's practical & realistic. I do try ONLY if it's not serious, culling sometimes the most humane thing to do. It's all part of raising animals, the hardest part, I've done it not that I like to

I know it was't funny but you got to admit, it's a chuckle now.....Your attempt to remove the eggs from your Broody? I could see the whole thing like a video, you wouldn't happen to have a camera set up in the coop? It would be a good "what not to do".....Has she started laying?

I've got a Broody, broke her once a few months ago but now she refuses to break, unfortunately for me I can't/don't have a male. She was to go to a friend's who has a Roo last weekend but my friend's down with Vertigo & Migraine. So hoping this weekend. Lucky for me I don't have a problem removing the eggs she collects daily, only 4.

Speedy recovery on Ken's surgery. You're a WOMAN we have to be flexible & multi-task

Hope you have something bigger for them. That many chicks will be outgrowing that in less than a week.

Yes, we will be finishing up the garden shed tomorrow. Some of them are 1.5 weeks old, others are 2.5 weeks old. I'm hoping in about 1.5 weeks they won't need the MHP. It is getting very warm here. Some days are in the 90s! It also looks a loy smaller in the picture. We have a very large kennel that we are using.
