Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

That's one of the more unique setups we've seen on here.....

Mine are here! He ordered 15. When we opened the box at the Post Office 17 beady little sets of Silkie eyes were looking back up at us! There is one little one that I doubt will make it, and another is super tiny compared to the others, but for chicks that took 4 days to arrive and sat in a Post Office sorting facility from 7 am until 3 am the next morning, then had a long truck trip, they look amazing!

Paying my dues - Yep, I know they are overcrowded....this brooder is more like a "holding facility" until I am sure everyone is doing well and then they'll head out to the big brooder.

Not a fan of silkies....but the white chicks with the black skin/beaks and that little dash of blue really get to me.
I wasn't crazy about them, either. Pocket lint with legs. But Katie loves them, and by golly if she's gonna be asked to watch the chickens every time Ken and I have to go out of town (which is frequently) then she can have some skin in the game out there! And now even Kendra loves them. All the standards are "chickens" but she calls the Silkies "birds". Guess she doesn't see them as chickens either!

What really shocks me is to see Ken out there putzing around in the yard, carrying a Silkie under his arm. Never in a million years thought HE'D be the one to like them!

Katie and her bucket of chicken from last year's hatch of Silkies.

Kendra and her buddy, Smudge.

Congrats on the silkies! My kids said they didnt want chickens unless they could have silkies. I wanted all large fowl and didnt want ot mix in bantams although I do now know that people do this with success and its very cold up here in Mass and as a first time chicken owner I wanted the odds in my favor for success. Well, the best made plans ....and all that...but congrats and I think they are super cute!

Quote: Makes sense to me.
I've had other birds... breeding pair of finches, parakeets, and cockatiel .... way back when my kids were young.
I like large fowl chickens, 'plain' ones.... no feathered legs, or hugely feathered butts or vision impairing head feathers.
But I can see the attraction of sebrights and silkies and maybe even other bantams...maybe some day.

The text from the post office that said my chicks were here made it to my phone an hour after I picked them up. Got the text that the chicks had made it to the big town 120 miles from here after I picked up the chicks. Was not impressed with the USPS tracking texts.
