Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

The feed doesn't contain grit

Ugh. So that could be what's killing them?

What about ground up gravel from the drive way?

And I do have two clumps of sod in there, they peck at the clover and grass but not so much the dirt, that I've noticed anyway.
@aart Didn't lose any bigs

The BO was a chick. And they're 5 days old

NO gravel from the driveway. You can get bird grit its fine enough. walmart should carry it or any pet store.

Hi Blooie,
This year I tried your Mama Heat Pad method and I've loved it so far. No stinky chicks inside and best of all no dust! I do have a question though. Lately when I check on the chicks before bed, they've been huddled together on top of the their "cave". It still gets down towards freezing on a nightly basis, so i've been pushing them underneath, and then they seem to stay there for the night. Should i be worried that they'll freeze if they don't? Or am I being paranoid?

I've got 10 4 day old chicks in my brooder and for some reason they sleep on top of the heating pad and not in the nice cave. They do run in and out of it during the day, but at night, pile up on top.

They are going to the outside brooder tomorrow (Hawaii), day and night temps in the high 70s, low 80s. Maybe they just don't need/want the heat?

My last group of 30 went outside at 1 week with no heat and are all feathered out beautifully at 6 weeks. They free range and come back to their shed at night. Just went down to count to make sure they all made it back. Got the look when I shined the flashlight. Rooster from the other coop let me know he wasn't happy either. I'll hear about it in the morning. :)

With such warm ambient temps as you have where you live, the chicks just don't need to warm up to the degree other chicks do who are in much cooler surroundings, like here on the mainland where it's not getting much warmer than 60s on average and still flirting with close to freezing temps at night.

Try raising the configuration of the cave frame and lowering the setting on the heating pad and see if that doesn't get them inside of MHP.

Everyone is alive this morning <3 Thankful for that! And thankful for all of you here in this thread for your constant help and support :)

It's so funny, I love watching them pop over to the feeder, grab a drink, maybe some more feed and scoot back under mama, so cute! I could watch them for hours!

It's in the low 20's and so it's the chilliest day so far for them outside, I have it set on 4. It's supposed to get up to 60
