mattsinger: I just bought a small LED flashlight that was 110 lumiens. It worked so much better. Unfortunately, the Ameraucana egg that showed all the nice veins is ruined I am pretty sure, the thermometer fell on it, cracked and dented the shell, nothing leaked out but when I went to candle again, I could see blood in the egg, no veining. My hatch has been doomed from the start. Let me know if you can see your Marans after you get your new flashlight. At least I can live vicariously through you and SarahInAlaska!!! Good luck!
 
I need a brighter flashlight. We had a 200 lumien (or something like that) flashlight that was on my husband's duty belt that was stolen. It was unfortunately one of the things we didn't get back when the bag was found. I canceled on day seven and I'm going to try again in Friday at day 14.

That really stinks Cluck5. I'm sorry to hear that.

so your eggs are 4 days ahead of mine. Friday will be day 10, but probably wont have time to candle them until Saturday. So, could you see any veining??.. or jsut darkness and the air cell?

All I could see were dark areas in the eggs but some were so dark the light could hardly pass through the shell at all. Hoping a brighter light will make things more visible. One of the eggs had half the shell look dark. I don't know. I'm new to this so they could all be duds and I just don't know it :(. I'll try for pictures Friday to show y'all.
 
Sounds like yousr are looking like mine...I had 6 ( before this SETTING) this spring that did not make it,,In hindsight ,,those eggs came from first yr hen..Not sure they were fertile,,Wait take that back one was for sure...Guess will know in a few weeks....Peace
 
Sigh. Wish I'd picked an easier egg to candle for my first time! They are so dark! I tried to get pics of them but the dark areas don't show up in the pics very well.

Missed a couple pictures. If there's a small dark spot that appears to float freely is that a yolk? That was my assumption. Most of these (all but 3) were in the XXL class for weight (all 2.75 oz or more. One was about 4oz) so I wouldn't be surprised if what I'm seeing is just double yolks on most. I'm hoping in wrong :(. But I won't be surprised if its a failed hatch. I've had tons of memory problems with turning (couldn't afford an auto one) and the last two days I've been fighting to bring the temp and humidity down. It turned rainy outside and my temp shot up to 102* and my humidity to just over 70%. We are just now reaching normal levels but I had to completely empty the water trays to get it there.
 
Hope it work out.. and I'd really like to hear what the experts say about your pics. I'm going to attempt to do my eggs tonight.

I candled mine an i get the same results

well, I never made it to try and candle any of the eggs yesterday. Spent all day with my son at the dragstrip....then dinner with friends and family.......I think I collapsed as soon as I got in last night. I'll try it tonight....day 12. I did open it for a sec just to smell for anything bad.....nothing stinks.
