Maran Assortment coming soon...Newbie needs help

Man those are large.... I should be getting 14 from and Ebay purchase....I love those ebay folks..they are the best on the planet.I have found out that if you go with and ebay seller that has good ratings....They say they send extras,,But I always give them a little story of how hard it is to get any eggs in Alaska...Most will give even more than purchased...This last one was for doz for $25 plus $17 to ship..Seller told me they were shipping 14 MaransBCF and sending a couple legbar and a cuckoo lemon orpinton.. 17 eggs for the price of the doz..I like finding one day newly lisedt auctions.I have had the best of luck with ebay...With lg dark eggs like Marans lay..I think can asking $7 a doz @ the farmer market..Thats my plan anyways.Works for me,, Just a thought....
So you don't have problems with shipped eggs? It's nice to know you have had a good experience. Do you deal with someone in specific? Wow $7 a doz (those dark Marans eggs are real beauties), maybe that can help balance out the cost of buying/incubating the eggs, raising & feeding the chickens!! (My husband always jokes "So, do you think you're saving money on eggs by having your own chickens")!!!!

Ill have to try eBay next time I do eggs. I know I'm not saving really, but here it's always nice to get something fresh. Our grocery store fruits awful, vegetables are bad to mediocre and farmers markets are to expensive for us so we are trying to grow as much of our own as possible.

mattsinger: Excited for you, your eggs have arrived...yay!!! Will you let them sit for a certain period of time before you set them? Also, how far away did your eggs come from, how do the air cells look, I am very curious. I hope they are all ok. Mine supposedly were shipped today, so we shall see what shape they are in when they arrive on Wednesday!

SarahInAlaska: Planting must seem a long ways away. I know it is for me, I still have about 5 feet of snow in our backyard. I am sure the scenery is beautiful where you are, it is too bad about the food situation though.

Well, having never done this...and having dark eggs, its a little tuff. Most look good, some I cant see much anything through them. I have one that the air cell is on the small end of the egg....do I keep that one small side up??..or keep the small side down? A couple of them appear to be loose, but only move a very little bit...and they are still at the fat end of the egg...they dont move down the side if you tip the egg, so I guess that is good.

cluck5: it's actually not too bad. We were okay until last week when we had 18" dump but we've had some okay warm temps but its still going to be a late spring. All my starts are getting wayyyyy too big in the garage :(. But I only have about 8" of snow left, so it will be here enforce we know it.

mattsinger: I couldn't tell you for sure, but I've been reading on the incubating thread, that you should let them sit for 12-24 hours (in a basement for example cause it's cool and moist) fat end up in a egg carton with the bottoms of the carton cut out. Then when you're ready to set them in incubator, leave them at room temp for several hours and keep them in the carton in incubator fat side up, no turning for a few days if air cells detached. Maybe you've already put them in your incubator. I don't even have my shipped eggs yet, so you're the expert!
