I've really been researching this and cant quite get to the bottom of it. What is the clear distinction between maran and langshan? Especially with roos that dont lay how would you differentiate? I know the langshan went into forming the maran so that's probably why this isnt clearer for me.

I've seen that the tail on the langshan tends to be higher set like a U, but then I also see images of BCMs with higher set tails as well. I've also read that langshans are the tallest non game bird, but I'm not sure how that relates to the maran height.

I ask because I have a roo that is absolutely huge, much bigger than my buff orp roo of the same age. Was marked BCM but has absolutely no copper on him. Has white/pink skin, and sparse feathers down his legs and outside toe. Anyone have thoughts on this?? Would he be that much bigger than the buff orp if hes truly a maran?

You could be correct about the rooster! It does not sound like a Marans.

Where did you get him? Can you post pictures?

You might get better answers by starting a thread with pictures here: https://www.backyardchickens.com/forums/what-breed-or-gender-is-this.15/

I'll definitely make a post there and thank you for your response! I got him at Tractor Supply so I'm aware that what they labeled him may not be the most accurate. And I apologize for my pics of him not being the best. Some of the pics dont do how big he is justice, hes definitely a big boy!

He looks young still my BCM boy didn't start getting color until around 13 weeks.

His dark brown eyes make me think langshan. I'll see if I can find some old pictures.

I don't really have any decent pictures of the marans but maybe these will help.
The black boy, and the hens around him are a mix of orpington, brahmas, and isa brown.

The blue guy was huge, even for a langshan he outweighed his dad who's the black roo above. The thing he's stanging under is about 2' high. And that's a langshan hen next to him.

Pretty sure he was less tha a year old in these pics.

I wish i had better pics of this guy, his back was about 3" lower than the grey langshan.

The same boy is on the furthest left side of this picture. He was slightly bigger than the barred rock boy that was the same age, who's also in this picture. Sorry they're not close ups.

Both are gorgeous birds! I'll definitely keep those pics in mind as he develops.
