Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Yes, it can take a few to several days for them to get darker, however after a week that's about it. Blue and Black Marans are not known for consistently laying good, dark eggs.

I just got 5 adorable Maran chicks from Renee today. (ChooksChick) They are the softest chicks I have ever petted.

NOw heres hoping that at least 3 of the 5 are girls. All 5 would be great but not counting on that.

Here is an egg that our Cuckoo Marans laid yesterday, she is hatchery stock so the color isn't impressive but she's laying again.

Cuckoo egg next to a Partridge Bantam Cochin egg:

For some reason she decided not to lay an egg today!

What a nice job you did on your nest boxes Susie.
I have a few loose chickens that can clear the 6 foot fence also so they are either being given away or wing clipped. They are my son's & I told him i want "NO" cross contamination......LOL

It has been a night with no sleep here. One of our nubian does just had her first batch of kids.

She had triplets.

They are SOOOOOOO cute! It is really cold out there, so we have them in the house where we can get them dry and warm. One is up and walking but the other two aren't that far along yet. Can't put them back outside yet, so no sleep for us.

Here are a couple of random chick pictures of my little Blue Copper pullet "baby blue" she is the 2nd generation of Bill's first dtr. produced from crossing him with a Davis pullet and crossing that pullet back to Bill. Yes she has feathered shanks, not heavily feathered shanks but one nice line of feathers down to the toes, but not on the outer toe. I'm working on the shank feathering, we have to remember that Bill is clean legged.
She has great lacing but is not showing any copper yet. These 3 babies are just over 3 mos.

Here is her little Splash Copper brother that I thought was a very light blue copper, from the same cross as "baby blue", I swear he is getting more copper everyday. He has the same amount of shank feathering as his sister. I'm going to try this guy out over some GFF Black Coppers to see if I can increase copper in the hackles of the girls who are very dark or showing very little copper and for all Blue Copper babies.

Here's a Splash boy out of Gnarles crossed over one of Bill's dtrs. produced with a Davis pullet as well. See the difference in the blue coloration of Gnarles light blue color vs. Bill's very dark blue color in the their offspring.
