I've been 'out of pocket' for several months, and I've missed all the all posts. It's gonna take me a while to read all the back stuff, so I'm jumping in with a question which may have already been discussed.

I've got both the Bev Davis line and the Wade Jeane line (kept separately) and have noticed that of 8-9 roos I've raised from both lines and they are ALL stinkers! I've never had so many run-ins with roos before. They've still not learned the pecking order at my farm, so I enter at risk with a stick in hand.

I'm running out of mean names for them, we've got "Lucifer", "Satan-himself", "Beezlebub" and "BeetleJuice"....
They are BEAUTIFUL boys, hand-raised from chicks who loved my mealworms. But let those hormones kick in and all of a sudden I can't turn my back on them.

Anybody else seen this happen in this breed?

i have 4 cullwheaten roos and they are the nicest sweetest birds ever , my mom loves how friendly they are they eat right out of your hand my main roo is nice ,and i have around 8 other that are the same ,,,sweet

just a random back yard pic we are surrounded by hickory and oak trees and other types on a wooded lot on a mountian (foot hill) .when chickens free range they eat more bugs than grasses because there is no fields around by us the soil we have here is very poor, I cant see in the past 40 years I can remember the trees here growing a inch lol . I wanted to say when people post chicken pics I love to see “the back yards” in the pictures as well as your flocks

My roo is a sweet heart. He listens to me when I call his name and seriously trys to figure out what I want him to do.
When I call him - - - he comes a running.

I pick him up a couple of times a week and softly talk to him while I caress his comb and wattles. I gently sit him on the ground after 5 - 10 minutes of holding and walking with him. I believe this keeps me in top rung of the pecking order ladder.


My boy is only 5 - 6 months old. Maybe he will turn nasty later, but so far so good.

How long does it take for a marans roo to fully mature? I dont mean to start breeding, I mean to where he is fully bodied out.

Hi everybody!

I have been out of action here-- I welcomed my new Grandson into the world 3 weeks early and helped his Mama out for a few days.

I have another question about the "white stuff" in the feathers... sorry.

The other two Roos are free ranging and I looked for the next best Roo in the 10 left. So I get this boy who I think is very nice looking. A little on the Mahogany side but looks good.

He doesn't have all the white feathers popping through his hackles and tail but when I pull up his hackles and the other feathers on his body I do see the base of the feathers as white.

He hasn't molted yet and I don't know if this is normal or not. I have heard many say not to get rid of them until after they have molted, because you don't get the real color until then.
