As I go into my fifth season with them, I'm finding that my notes take forever to go through to find whatever it is I'm looking for...I'm goign to begin toe punching, and am hoping this will help my system a bit!

the trouble i have with numbered led bands are i cant read the numbers when the chicken is moveing and sometimes i just want to know who they are with out haveing to grab each one and i worry about toe punches and birds that free range getting sticks and twigs caight in the forest they free
range in, ps ....i should say i have no experance with toe punches but i do know when im working in the yard with gloves on i always mannage to get sticks caught in the holes

I used to do the toe punching when I was a kid, but haven't done it in years and have been thinking about resurrecting that again since there is so much to keep track of. I will have at least 5 breeding pens as well as several pairs for test mating and that does seem like it would help. I also have a rooster that has decided he likes pecking on the spiral numbered bands and is surprisingly talented at getting them off...of himself and others. So, toe punching seems like a nice fail safe. This year I am going to be focusing more on breeding for egg color along with the body confirmation. What is the easiest way you have kept track of progress? do you keep bits of the shells chicks hatched from with their records? or?

egg shells loose color in a short time in sunlighht and wouldnt help u after a month ot two

In case you have forgotten the patterns. It is the most foolproof way to keep track from chick on to adult.

I seen this on my egg color cards. What is it? I've never heard of anyone around here doing it.

Toepunching is an easy system to use. I found a thread here on the forum that explains it well. The toe puncher can be purchased inexpensively through various poultry supply places.

hope this helps some
