I seen this on my egg color cards. What is it? I've never heard of anyone around here doing it.

It is a way to know what pen, mating or whatever a bird came from. A permanent mark in case a band falls off. It is a great way to keep track of birds and I bet your 19 year old girlfriend can explain it to you.

Then you won't be re-homing your good birds. hahaha

If you have trouble with the punched holes then split the webbing instead of punching . Use a pair of scissors(sharpe) and just use the tip of it to split the web , they will not grow back to gether . I've been doing this over 55 years .

I used to do the toe punching when I was a kid, but haven't done it in years and have been thinking about resurrecting that again since there is so much to keep track of. I will have at least 5 breeding pens as well as several pairs for test mating and that does seem like it would help. I also have a rooster that has decided he likes pecking on the spiral numbered bands and is surprisingly talented at getting them off...of himself and others. So, toe punching seems like a nice fail safe. This year I am going to be focusing more on breeding for egg color along with the body confirmation. What is the easiest way you have kept track of progress? do you keep bits of the shells chicks hatched from with their records? or?

They love frogs.....I've never seen a frog disappear that fast. Froggy all gone, bye bye. They literally go nutz over frogs and tear thems to pieces fighting over who is going to get it or them.

They do that with the tomato Horn worms I throw to them in the summer. It's just too much fun to watch them chase each other to steal.....LOL

LOL! Around here we call that chicken football !

Sounds fun! I've got some black coppers, cuckoo, black and blue birchens...its a test hatch, so there's also a couple wild card mixes in there I thought I'd try just for fun. I'm kinda hoping for a couple of blue cuckoos...but won't know til they decide if they want to hatch or not.

Good luck to you too!

Blue cuckoos would be fun! We are hoping for some blue golden cuckoos out of these guys. The eggs are all out of my blue copper pullet, but she is with my feather shanked golden cuckoo rooster, feather shanked blue copper rooster, and clean shanked golden cuckoo rooster, so who knows who the daddy is! I havent candled yet to see how many are developing, its too cold outside! Maybe I will get brave tonight! Cant wait to see what hatches from your eggs!

You keep messing around like that and you are gonna have Cream LegBars !! LOL!!!

I have just started banding them & writing down the bands & what they are. Some info is general as 1 color of band is from one breeder one year. Color changes for each breed, breeder or year. I will be in a world of hurt if I lose my notebook . I guess I better log it in this computer for safe keeping..............LOL

I noticed you mentioned your egg color chart on your next post. You should be able to rate your egg color by that. The camera is not always kind to egg color. Try comparing your eggs to your chart.
Are your chcikens Black Copper Marans? Other Marans lay lighter eggs. I am waiting to see what my Wheaten Marans lay. I was very disappointed in my Silver Cuckoo Marans egg color. My Black Copper Marans are the darkest eggs I get.

that sounds like me walt. re-homeing the wrong birds and a young girlfriend (she is 31 and im 50 +)and makes it about 19 years differance in age ,,,, i know berkeleysprings and bigspringshatchery sounds like a similar name .....lol lol

My Marans hatching eggs should be arriving today - I am so excited!

I hope to be able to post some nice photos this evening...

Question about toe punches. How old do the chicks need to be before they get punched. This would be great bc I have 3 different lines black copper and 2 different lines of blue and splash marans.
