Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Be careful with the netting mel... It can come down with Snowfall.... I lost an entire pen of chickens when mine collapsed under snowload 2 years ago... Make sure the Chooks are INSIDE.... Congrats on the find.

Good Morning Everyone!!!!!!!

Good Morning Pinks,

Quick question for you or anyone is welcom to chime in. Have babies hatching in waves and was wondering what you are using to tag/label them. It almost looks like tape in a way. Just need a good way to identify them as I'm currently using zip ties but not liking that so much and will not use those coil wire thingies......hard lesson learned with that one!! Thanks for the info.

Thanks everyone for the compliments on the eggs and the well wishes for them to make a safe journey to Maine......boy they couldn't be going any farther from home could they? This Marans stuff is totally kinda cool!

Risa~

I use vet wrap. I cut it in to small strips and just press it together around the leg, leaving enough room for it to spin freely. Works great and the first piece can stay on sometimes up to 2 weeks, but I try to replace them before that because the little buggers grow so fast. The nice thing about vet wrap is that it stretches as they grow, and it is cheap. It also comes in several different colors. I use this because I hate those little tiny band things for chicks and doing it one handed is for the birds. Vet wrap......I can do with one hand and hold the squirmy little chick in the other. The little chick bands are a one handed sport and that's not for me.

I use the vet wrap until their legs are big enough to put a numbered bandette on them and it won't fall off. I love the numbered bandettes and they too are pretty easy to operate with one hand.

Those tiny little plastic spiral bands, IMO, are STUPID! I hate them.....it's like they can be on the chick for 4-5 days, still spins freely at this point and then suddenly in the next 2-3 days those things are imbedded in their little legs and very tight. They have those very sharp ends to them as well that dig in. Seems to me that a band would have been designed to be used on chicks that would grow with them somewhat and could be used for more than a couple days.

I'll keep an eye on my netting although the mesh is about 2" squares... I am going to re -enforce the attached edges with cedar 1"x2" strips tho to keep it from pulling loose if it ever does develop a snow/ice load.

Mel I am thinking about getting netting over the tops of a few of my runs. Some of mine have shade cloth right now and it works really well but it does get heavy and stretches when it rains etc and then I have to take everything apart and tighten it up. It is a royal PIA to do that lol! I think I will just keep a section of shade cloth and the rest netting....

Morning my friend!

We have snow....you?

How's your little Splash Marans chickies doing?

How are the others doing....I bet they are pretty good sized? 'Specially that Bill baby..yea?

The netting I got from Murray McMurray was 2" mesh, 25'x50' size and cost $87.00. It was a "drop ship" item and arrived at my house 5 days after I ordered it.

The 3 little ones are doing great. One of them is noticeably larger than the other 2.

The original "Gang of 6" are feathering in quite nicely. Got my first egg from the "Bills' Baby" yesterday!
