Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Thanks to everyone for the responses and genetics on feathered shanks. It explains why I had one clean shank in my most recent hatch. I was starting to doubt myself on the identification of the eggs that had been set. The eggs that were set came out of a clean legged rooster and a nicely, but not overly so, feather shanked hen. Of the four that hatched, I have one clean leg. For the feather shanked, there are no feather showing on the toes. And, probably the best news is one of the feathered shank chics is a roo!

i sell wheaten hens close to pol for around 25 bucks each and always roos are free

I bought some cuckoo chicks last spring and kept the 4 best for my start with the cuckoos and sold a trio to a lady that was looking for some more layers for her pen and then all of a sudden she pops up selling chicks from them at pretty high prices. Like three or four times what I would charge. It can be frustrating when people are selling at such high prices for the quality.

Wow....a new barn!! That's awesome! I bet by the time you and Kim sit down and sort out the plans for breeding pens you will have a fantastic set up! You'll have to post pics of the process!

My Dh is the same way. . . . I'm the extrovert and he is the introvert. We make a good match, but things like BIG SOCIAL gatherings would drive him nuts

In the bottom picture - the one of the funky looking OE - I see copper in the hackles of that smaller blue hen

Very pretty girls, Mel and Pink. Although I love the look of the blues, I'm going to stick with my BCM's. I wish I could handle more varieties, but until I get my barn finished, it's not going to happen.

I'm getting some lavender ameraucanas from John Blehm in a month, then I will mix a couple of them with my marans to get some olive eggers. Should make for a pretty colorful egg basket.

6-8 inches of snow here. Cold and cloudy. 3 of my stupid leghorns spent the night out perched on the fence over their run. I found them this morning. They must have been out there through the whole storm. One had an icesicle stuck to her butt.

How in the world do they live through that?????? An icesicle stuck to her butt????????????? Too funny.!!!!!!

How in the world did I miss Keara's news?!?!?!?!? I'm sorry Keara! Lucky you to have Ms. Wynette's eggies to put in with your own pretty eggs! I wish you the best of luck with all of them.

Lisa,
I soooooooooooooooooo idenify with you on that, but after over 35 years I have grown totally used to it & have become pretty much socially independent. There are other people out there with the same interests that like to be with people so it works out & then there is always my grand daughter.....LOL
