Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

We have a homemade incubator. It is all digitally controlled - - - thanks to my Dh's electrical background.

We did not callibrate all the equipment on the first hatch - - -

I hatched 1 / 4 roos for the delawares
I hatched 4 /4 roos for my own stock
and hatched 6/ 9 roos for another breeders bcm stock.

On the second hatch, we calibrated three sets of temperature gauges. . . .
I hatched a total of 10 / 16 roos . . . . 7 / 9 were the marans that I am tracking / studying.

The second hatch went PERFECTLY. The normal size eggs hatched on Day 21. The Jumbo eggs hatched on Day 22 / 23.

I did not have any early hatchers on either hatch - - - temps were not running high by that indicator.

That's great you can eliminate that factor it sounds like. I would lean towards it being a season thing, related to hatching in winter. Which is great, since spring is right around the corner!!

This is my year to hatch. Hope Dh still loves me when it is all done!

Cool I love my 2 sussex even if they are hatchery babies. I've never had Delawares and don't know anything at all about them lol.

They won't be hatchery . . . I promise!

Delawares - - - you will be converted.

PINK OH PINK - - - My delaware roo has yet to crow. He is the same age as my other loud mouth BCM roos from the first hatch. They crow ALL the time. The delaware roo is in a separate pen with his ladies and I have NEVER heard him crow. NOW, the delaware pullets do the Geese sounds any time I bother them, but he is silent! How about your delaware roos?

I am not letting my son see your daughter.... we'd be kin!!! LOL... Wow what a looker!!

Okay back to bed now.. I was sleeping til the phone rang...

congrats on the pink eggies... I LOVE BILL>>>>> I LOVE GNARLES...

MATH ACE

The record being attempted is to hatch 90% roos for 12 hatches straight. Will she do it ladies and gents ? ??

Tune in Same web site, Same thread, Same time 12 months from now to find out . . .

Good morning Lisa,

Was just wondering if you attribute your rooster hatching talent to anything particular. I seem to remember something said on one of these threads about a high amount of roosters in early hatches? Do you think there is anything to that?

I had a pullet year in 2010. All I had was a styro incubator with a turner but I got 10 pullets to 3 cockerels in BCMs & 1 cockerel to 6 pullets in EEs. This year's hatch so far there is no telling but a friend & I did try the wing feather sexing thing on them but won't know for sure til much later. Yesterday I was telling my husband about the holding them up by the scruff of the neck thing you told us about & tried it on one. If it's true the one I picked up was a pullet. She struggled for a short time ( a few seconds) then just submitted & hung there.

I love my Delawares Fl................... Cool thing about them besides being the friendliest chickens I have is that all winter when everyone else was on strike they just kept on bumping out those eggs. What good girls they are & I have a great hatch rate with their eggs too. I have 16 of them running around in the brooder right now.
