We are harvesting our first roo this weekend. He has been a weenie since birth. ..

When I walk by him, he is ALWAYS stomping his feet. Each time, I say "soup pot" you need to stop being so nasty.
He just doesn't listen. He bit me a week ago when I went into his cage to feed him. . . .

Going to bite him back are ya?

I set them almost 30 minutes ago - - - YES get yours cooking girlfriend!

All I want to know is what are you going to do with all those roos you are going to be hatching . . .

I am DUE all the girls this time . . . . so that means you will have all the boys!

I know right?!?!?! I don't care how many roos I hatch out 'cause I eats 'em.......I might want to think about getting a bigger freezer though.

Eggs are all set.

Thanks Gilavina!

Did you see that purdy purple one in the front left corner? That is from my darkest laying BC pullet. The one before this one was not speckled but just lavender...it's in the 'bator too.

I have a question about my BCM young rooster (7 months). We just had several severe freezes and he seems to have developed several white feather episodes. Since I am a newbie about chickens/Marans (I have alot of younger ones that I will need to cull for quality), I need to learn about feather color/issues. Can anyone tell me if the white feathers are from the freezes or something that will stay with him? thanks in advance....

Oh the GREAT WHITE FEATHER MYSTERY , , , ,

White feathers can appear suddenly - - even after not having any for the first year of life.
White feathers can appear after an injury to the feather.
White feathers sometime disappear at the next molt.
White feathers can be associated with excessive corn consumption.

PERSONALLY, I have a roo that is right at a year of age. His white feathers appeared while he was a teenager . . . 3 - 5 months old. They did not molt away. HOWEVER, they are starting to slowly be oversome with the black in the feather. I am watching to see how long it takes to disappear.

Some folks believe if you give the bird enough time . . . it will eventually go away. Others believe that it should be culled for after the first juv molt.

Gilavina- Lovely babies! great pics. I think the ones looking at the egg were thinking, "What's HER problem? It didn't take US that long to hatch! She's just lazy. Do you know her mother? Oh the things I could tell you about her...blah blah blah...

Pink- BEAUTIFUL eggs! I am so envious of all you guys in hatching mode right now. My roos are in molt, and I am still working on facilities to get breeder pens set up. Now we have freezing rain and snow predicted again for tomorrow! ugh.

Mel- I think you and I have a very similar sense of humor. OMG! Is there something wrong with me?

Lisa, I am in the group that says do not let the white feather male reproduce because you will have many more white feather males running around, I tried using a beautiful BC male with white last year and was the biggest Marans mistake I have made so far.

Notice that this BC male has the white fluf on the coverts also and this is even worse. To be honest with you though most everyone else is using these pretty males. I guess we can go back to the old saying, I buy the feed and do the work so should be able to do as we please. Everyone just do what makes you happy. Don
