Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Good Morning Marans Folk.

Please pause for a commercial break....

If any of you are interested in White Marans, I have put an auction up on bidbirdauctions.com; I do not expect to offer many white eggs at auction, as I intend to hatch the majority to grow out. Just a scheduling thing, my bator is occupied and Karen's (sewandgrow) is full to capacity. I understand we need more numbers of whites for APA approval, so here is an opportunity to get started with some nice stock. If you were at the 2011 PPBA Show in Stockton, those were my whites.

Thanks!

Now back to your scheduled programming....

I am new to Marans but love them, maybe this is taboo as far as breeding quality Marans.........Has anyone ever crossed a FBCM Roo with a Wheaten Maran Hen? Any good or bad reasons to do it? My reasons for it would be I have ended up with 8 quality FBCM Roos (will be culling to 2 soon) and only one lovely Wheaten Maran Pullet who lays a 5-6 egg. My FBCM hens turned out all to be culls ): So, I will eventually get more FBCM hens, but in the meantime might be fun to play with the roos and the wheaten. Any opinions???

Not sleeping... I am just trying to leave my bator alone! They are being so slow. Three pips and I hear peeping. This part is so terrible. I can hardly stand it. Now I have read that Marans can take a little longer to hatch. Anyone experience that? I just never know if I should help the chicks out or let them be. So this is day 22 and no chicks out of the shell yet. If they do not hatch than I must be doing something wrong. The 11 eggs in there were all developed on lock-down day. I hope I didn't mess something up for the poor chicks sake! Wish them luck everyone. Pink needs more Grandchildren.

What are you running your humidity at?

I have a Brinsea eco 20 and I filled both channels filled with water n lock-down. Humidity was at 70% when I checked for lock-down. I can not check the humidity without opening the bator so I can not check it now. I can see the membrane on one of the eggs and it looks good. Not to dry or shriveled. I have not had them be to dry with my eggs in the past unless I open the bator. Waiting...

Cool, Thanks for sharing. DON'T OPEN IT!!!! Just asking. I am sitting on the edge of my chair. Very interested to see how your hatch rate is with them at a higher humidity level. I have never been able to get the humidity up that high to try. The best I've ever been able to get was like 60% once and it didn't last that long. If it works great for you and you have a good hatch rate, I will try up'ing the hum. on my next hatch if I can get it that high and see if it makes a difference.

eta: I can't wait to see how everyone's hatches go and compare all the different methods that each person uses and see what all the different outcomes may be. I will learn tons and tons by this. Thanks for helping make that happen.
