IMHO I would not buy eggs from someone who has golden and silver cuckoos mixed in the same pen. They don't breed true in many cases, and your chicks can be a genetic mystery as well.

Funny you should say that.. actually had PM from that other person. Yup we both got funky color!

I have a local auction here, I will most likey bring them the weekend before Easter and sell them. Make back the cost.

ETA: THEN I will come HERE for sellers!

This BCM girl was an excellent Marans momma.

They are protective but not half as evil as the KW hens are about thier babies lol. But then again my KW hens are still half wild. Do you have Orps or Silkies? They are supposed to be good broodies. I was told the kw were too and I believe it now. They are just small so can only cover about 12 of thier small sized eggs.

I don't know about chicks with an overall brown tint but I had two that had a brown spot. Those 2 turned into mossy roosters lol. One of them turned out to be the one we call Agent Orange. He is so mossy even his shanks are black and orange feathered lol.
Agent Orange ---worst case scenario of how you want a BCM roo to look haha.

I think Carrie (Harmony Oaks) said we are leaving on Friday headed up. She isn't on line as much as I am so give her some time to respond. I don't know what she has available. The newest chicks just hatched a couple of weeks ago. & she took them home.

I finally saw one of the baby key west chicks. It is so cute!! It was from the other broody. I ran into the house for the camera and when I came back the baby was back under the momma and she was giving me the evil eye. Both of thier chicks started hatching today!! I knew they had started sitting a few days apart but didn't think they would be hatching out on the same day. I heard a bunch of cheeping in there so there must be quite a few.
We put some tiny netting on the fence so they can't get through. I had some marans babies get through regular chicken wire when I made thier mom and them a brooder. The kw babies are a little smaller than the silkies I have hatched. I'm paranoid that something bad is gonna happen to them out there. I am glad thier momma is so protective. What is wierd is one of the other key west hens, that is not broody, was also acting like she was protecting the 2 nest boxes that had the chicks in them from me as well.

How exciting for you..........................I just love having them babies...!!!! LOL

I had a great hatch and have 19 fluffy little plumpkins running around in the brooder. I'm very impressed that only one egg that I got from cpartist that made it to lockdown did not hatch and I only removed 2 Marans eggs and the one Wellie egg sent from CP prior to lockdown....I think that's AWESOME for shipped eggs. THANK YOU CP!!!!!!!!


Oh and speaking of breeds that don't go broody.....a couple weeks ago one of my Welsummers went broody.

Never thought I would ever see that....but I put her on 5 Marans eggs and one of her own. Everyday...several times a day I was putting the eggs back under her because she would kick them out and sit on nothing. I got tired of that really fast so about a week ago I stuck 2- 3 week old Barnevelder cockerels under her and she has been a happy camper the whole time and is being an excellent mommy which is usually not the case for Welsummers. I would have rather that one of the Marans had gone broody but such is life.

I love to see baby chicks being naturally raised by their mommies. I can just sit and watch them for hours.

The best mommy I've ever had was a Buff Orpington. I didn't even have to separate the chicks from the other hens or roosters. To be honest, all the chickens in that coop were awesome when there were babies around. There was a time DH and I witnessed one of the other hens babysitting one of the chicks that had gone too far from it's mommy while free ranging. It was amazing to watch.

I find it interesting that a lot of folks with BCMs have Welsummers. Why the choice of Welsummers over Barnevelders? Don't both WS and BVs lay similiarly colored eggs, terra cotta or darker? (asking to learn, not to be contentious)
