Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

In looking at all these chicks I have gotten from Pinkchick this spring (I believe 20 in all), it looks like I have 4...maybe 5 Roos. Either Splash, Blue, or Black Copper. The biggest surprise is from the first "gang of 6" that I got. One is "Bills Daughter"...a gorgeous bird with large, meaty (almost pendulous) breasts. I named her Dolly Parton. But the other one in the bunch...and they are identical color...is a Roo! Now, of this "gang of 6" 2 are Wellies and 2 are Splash Olive eggers. The other 2 are "Dolly" and now this Roo. Neither is showing any sign of copper. They are just blue chickens...I know, I know..Y'all wanna see pics..well, look at when this was posted..I'm working 12:00-12:00...when I get a chance (probably Monday) I'm gonna post some pics. I got a group of 4 from her (Pinkchick) about 3 or 4 weeks ago, and one of them is a VERY dominant Roo. He is the only one who sits on the roost (he absolutely rules it!) even at this age. I am hoping that I can keep more than one Roo in my flock as they mature. The Roo that is "Dolly's Brother" is already living in the main coop with Madison, which is the big Splash Marans Roo that I got from Kim in February. Pictures to follow...

I have 2 baby Marans in my brooder, hatched from shipped eggs I received from Monique!

It looks like one Black Copper and one Blue Copper!

Hello! I have an oppurtunity to buy 16 hens and 2 roos,(Black Copper Marans) suppose to be from Bev Davis line. is there anyway of telling if they are her line? Also 2 metal nest racks, cages, feed, and 4 pens with no bottoms (I havn't seen them but I'm thinking tractors maybe), a big wooden box to hatch eggs (says GQF on door), and a metal cage for the babies which says (GQF Brooder) has light and heater inside.

This is in a sales paper. What do you think about this deal? What is it worth?

ONCE they have been removed from the breeder for one or two generations - - - They can lose the quality that the breeder was known for. .. What I am saying is just because they originate from a well know line does not gaurantee show quality or high quality.

You must go look and evaulate them. . . .

You can post pictures here and we could help you evaulate them. . . .

Good luck with whatever you decide to do. ..

If I am reading the add right these birds are first generation, or should I say original stock. So they should be direct from Bev.i looked on the GQF website but I didn't see a wooden cased incubator. He is asking $500 for the lot. He is selling because of divorce.

If I had the opportunity to get them I would do my homework first and perhaps get in contact with Ms. Bev herself and give her the gentlemans name and see if she recalls sending out birds or eggs to him....also from time to time Bev gets overloaded with requests for birds and eggs and I know she will refer prespective buyers to folks that she knows has her stock, this could have been one of those instances. I would say that with everything this man is offering to sell that even if they are not Bev Davis birds it still seems worth it to me as long as the birds are happy and healthy. And I agree with Math Ace.....look at them and evaluate them as a bird overall, do not just go by their "name."

How old are the birds?

Some birds will show copper and some will not. I have not been able to get copper in any of Bill's daughters with the exception of one of his Splash Olive egger daughters, she shows a couple specks of copper, but that is all. BUT, I can get copper in his male offspring though.
