Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

A Black Copper rooster over cuckoo hens produces a version of golden dark cuckoo roosters and black unbarred hens. Hens may show a little gold in the hackle.
Barred sex-linking works with almost any solid color with dark chickdown, if you want to identify sex at hatch. With marans, this rules out wheaten and white.

. Doesn't like non-English speaking peeps?? Sounds like a troll to me! There is a "report" button in the bottom right hand corner of each post, if he really ticks you off. Otherwise, I'd just ignore him. Most folks on here are great people, but there are a few TROLLS. Don't feed the Trolls!

Aloha ? ? ?? Are you in Hawaii??

I use photobucket! Love IT to import pictures to BYC. Right click on the image code in photobucket ( this should copy it) and then paste it in your text / post on BYC. MUCH EASIER Than BYC's upload process if you ask me AND AND AND there is no limit to the number of photos you can store on the photobucket.

You can not tell anything about the coloring yet. . . . They are going to get real feathers and do a juvie molt before you can tell anything about color.. . .

I find the personality can change a lot over that time too. I ( and just my opinion) think you are shooting in the dark at just a few weeks old. . ..

Make it easy on yourself and let the person buying them choose

I have them and just need to upload them. . . .We spent today working on Brooder # 3. This one is the BIGGEST and is turning into a beast of a project.

I think I did a BIG NO NO . . . . I stuck a 1/2 dozen of my own eggs in the frig for storage while I was collecting them. It just seemed too hot to store them anywhere else

Yesterday was day 21 AND NOTHING. NOTHING YESTERDAY OR TODAY. My eggs have always hatched, but not this time.

I am guessing the refrigerator was a BAD IDEA.....

Has anyone else ever tried it ?? ?

Sounds like you have your hands full there with that brooder! Can't wait to see all your pics!

I remember reading someone's post somewhere here on this forum about how they would just take eggs out of their fridge and toss them in the incubator and had success. I don't remember what their success rates were or anything, but I do know they did get some. Maybe they will just take a little bit longer? Not sure....

Spent the day so far fighting the wind and getting my first lettuce planted and made some cloches for over them out of gallon water jugs. Planted my garlic and red onions down in the perennial bed where I don't need to till. I also worked on spacing for the raspberry supports so I can transplant them. And still nooooo baby goats yet. Thinking I'm gonna have to check and see if there is a breech baby...poor little doe.

I'll have to get some pics of my garden when things get to growing...right now its just a big section of dirt...

Its one of those days..where I feel behind on everything

I just have a general question on breeding decent stock. I have quite a few cuckoo marans roosters. but not sure what is needed or not needed. I don't know if they are even that good. but a couple have a single(or couple)white tail feathers. Is that ok? or not? what color legs? I don't have any pics at this point and it takes too long to upload them on my slooow dial up LOL.

Thanks

I have incubated refrigerated eggs. When my blues first started laying I refrigerated several pullet eggs because I didnt think they would hatch being the first ones and really small but then about 4 days later (if I am remembering right on the time) someone told me they would hatch so I put them in with some other blue eggs I got in the mail. All the refrigerated pullet eggs hatched but one~ I think there were 6 and 5 hatched. I brought them up to room temperature before I set them but nothing else special. They were in the refrigerator door, not sure if that made any difference either. I know some parts of the fridge are colder than others.

I don't think there is an AMERICAN Standard for the cuckoo marans, so you will want to visit the French site for marans to get the best idea of what the standard will be most like.

I am going to be little help because I am a BCM girl, not a cuckoo marans person.

YIPEE, I've got pipping on 3 of the 5 eggs. It is the 22 evening and these are my JUMBO Eggs. They normally take one day longer than normal eggs. . . .
Man I was really freaking out because there has been NO SIGN of activity! A couple of hours after I posted earlier. . . . I checked and 3 were pipping !
