Hmm, sure that's a hen?? Looks like an overly red, Blue Copper cockerel to me?

Debbi, look at her back, if that is a male he is doing more than a male should be doing. Don

Oh Don, only one cup of coffee in me. I see it now, but that bird still looks rooish to me, in the head. And still looks blue copper. Those are the biggest wattles and comb I've ever seen on a hen!

and the Marans thread! Snooty?? Can't recall any snooties here, just a bunch of helpful folks and those that love their Marans with a passion. I've heard that before about rabbit shows, and it's a shame that the kids are the ones that end up suffering for it. It goes the same way and worse in horse and dog shows! Been there, done that...done with it. Rule number one here on this thread...we LOVE pics!! Feel free to post pics of your fuzzy butts and older chooks too! Those that want critiques of their birds should ask for one; those that want to just share pics can do that too. Be aware, if you do ask for a critique, you WILL get an honest evaluation of your bird. Don't misconstrue that as "snooty", and don't take it personally. This breed is still very much in development in this country, so we all need all the help we can get. Everyone's flocks have faults, even the best of lines. The only way to learn is through constructive critisism. Sometimes, it gets a tad "passionate", shall we say? Still, like a family, it comes and goes and all is good. We discuss all kinds of things here, but we always come back to our Marans. Feel free to jump in, enjoy, and learn!

Well said Debbi,
I would hope that no newcomer to this thread would think of us as "Snooty" & thought I must have missed something that had gone by while I was busy when I read it. Sometimes it is hard to keep up & I am in ahatching frenzy right now & may be behind.....LOL

If he's in a pen with other roos, they may be picking on him. It did happen here to my older roo when the younger boys took over.

I'ts a hen. Photos deleted. Forget it. Sorry i posted. I have avoided this thread for a long time, and figured I'd give it another chance. I will post pics in the other thread. Thanks all that participated. I was hoping for a serious answer to a genetic question.

Steven,

On this thread, it is best to remind us what the original question was, as the thread moves so fast!

I remember though, and to this question, yes. Keep in mind, that Black and Blue Coppers are birchens too. They just express the gold gene. The offspring you are talking about will have both the gold and silver birchen gene. Birchen is the pattern, then color it in with either gold or silver.

Hummm....I think there is a thread on here about that CL ad. Here it is https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=478780 Is this familiar?

I don't know about the feathered shanks...it is a dominant gene so it would have taken a lot of work to intentionally breed it out. If the seller is the same as the link above I would pass. I don't think that egg color would even count as a #4.

Yeah that is the same stuff in the add really wasn't questioning is claims that top chefs use them becuase I know they do. That is just any chef prefrence some like any brown egg some like blues some like duck eggs for baking. I have not seen his eggs or chicks, although I did have dealing with him. All I can say is I personally dont trust him and dont like him claiming things that are not true. I honestly think only reason he got them was because I had told him I was in processes of switching over to marans only and EE.

He doupted me a few months ago called me up because I had a add selling eggs to eat and claimed he wanted just a few to hatch to start his own flock. He got a few dozen rhode island reds and duck eggs from me and then popped up his add trying to sell the chicks and incubate other people eggs for them for a fee. Know couple times a week he posts adds for different breeds saying they are his. His name is bill but his duaghter is also involved with the scam. I honestly dont think he owns a single bird and all pictures of the adults are from the net or from other peoples flocks.

I hope people do there homework before purchasing a single chick from that man and ask to see the parent stock and eggs they hatched from. I also sell my ducklings and some chicks on there but not going to lye to people. Im honest if they are mixed I tell them, Im not going to advertise my marans chicks when they hatch the extras as being something they are not. I post I put the money I make back into my animals because it is true. I have yet to have to buy chicken food or shavings, or pay for my duaghters 4H this year because it all goes back to them. I figure they get what they need i take care of them and get my eggs so I should put what they make back into them. May sound stupid but it is what I do.
