Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

The owner is a very nice lady, administrator for some ag dept in the school system in so cal. I had told her about BYC and how helpful and knowledgeable the members are, and that it was a kid friendly site, well moderated and just a generally good site for info sharing... I am too ashamed of the answers here to send her a link to the discussion about her birds. She home schools her kids and is a very genteel woman.

Where did you repost the photos....I was looking for them but then I read that you deleted them. I would love to see them...can you send them to me in a PM? I love Salmon Marans and am very excited to hear of them when someone brings up the possibility of someone having one.

Yes, they would still be pure Marans even though "so and so lines" are crossed and if they are the same color variety of the breed or color varieties that are for lack of a better word "interchangeable" (spelling? sorry) and when ran together in the same pen produce pure offspring such as Blue, Black and Splash varieties.

Both lines are good and it's not the "lines" that are producing the clean legged birds it's the genetics of the individual bird and how it expresses upon hatch. There are 3 feather legged genes.....2 are dominant and 1 is reccessive so from time to time a clean legged bird CAN be produced from the matings of 2 feather legged birds regardless of whose line the birds are. Hope this helps!

That does make since, I was just thinking if they were truely that line they would all have feathered shanks from there chicks. But I also understand what others are saying to about the lines could be way back and poor breeding with them. just trying to learn the genetics of them more.

I feel like on here that if a person's doesn't say the right thing or spell something wrong or if their bird is not perfectly standard for the breed then you are put down and made to feel your birds are subpar. That isn't how it should be.

I think you need to re-read the comments I made.

1) It looks Blue Copper to me, not Salmon. It has too much red/copper in the breast.

2) It has a large comb and wattles for a hen, that's why I questioned the gender.

3) I did NOT make the remarks that followed, but I DO have a sense of humor.

4) I had a rooster that got plucked on the neck and back like that when the younger generation came of age.

Edited for trolling.

that's why I don't post that often, some people are just wound to tight, but I guess if you want a heart attack, then more power to ya, I'll keep trying to smile and enjoy as much as I can while I am here

It is never my intent to make anyone feel unwelcome in this thread or anywhere on BYC....sometimes I don't know the answers, so I don't respond and wait for others to chime in.
No-ones birds are subpar in my book.....we all have birds with faults that is how I look at it. I could care less if birds aren't perfect to be very honest with you....I truly only want that beautiful dark egg they can give me. Working on the color or confirmation of the birds is just something or somewhere for me to focus some attention to fill time. Why not after all they are here and laying eggs and it's fun to see what can be created with them, so that's what I do and if one happens to come out nicer than the parent stock then I consider it a bonus.

I apologize right now to anyone if I have ever offended or said something out of turn or off color.
