AND it was only the FIRST egg -- - -LORDY what is bigger than a JUMBO because that hen is going to lay it!

Well thats my six year old son's hands it is in, so it appears larger than it is really is. However I would say it does fall into the large size range. I was very pleased! Color not bad either.

Thank you Moderators and Administrators! I agree with you both 100000000000%, this thread has too much information in it to be locked down and unaccessible for all to glean from or continue to glean from or add important imput too.

Color is excellent for a FIRST egg and the size is very large for a first egg. . .. I was comparing it to the eggs behind it. I still say that hen is gonna make some BEYOND JUMBO eggs for you.
I get more excited over the SIZE of the egg than the color because we eat most of our eggs

sounds exciting...you'll have to keep us posted how this hatch goes with your settings! I love hearing about the things people do with their hatches and how they turn out. I've learned a ton and have tried a few and my hatch rates have definitely improved..particularly on the shipped hatching eggs.

Just opened a package of shipped eggs a few minutes ago, the post lady has my name and number next to her phone down at the local post office. If that's not an indicator I can't get a hold of Marans stock locally then I don't know what is.

I'm really keeping my fingers crossed for this batch....they are blue birchens...giving them another go round. I have some lavender silver sussex eggs coming in the next couple of days to go with these in the incubator...I am really looking forward to seeing what hatches this time around.

Thanks Vicki! I will update later when I get home....wouldn't ya know it, just my luck I have to work today and can't sit here and watch them.

Good hatching vibes coming your way.

I want me some Blue Birchens SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO bad. I think I shall lay down in the middle of my living room floor and throw a fit until I get some even though I know it won't get them to me any faster. I want them from a certain breeder and at this time I must learn to be patient and wait because I know they aren't ready yet.

We'll see what I am really made of, if I can with stand the wait.

Haha...I think a fit sounds fabulous...sure to get you just the results you want, no? haha...you are too funny. I have my eye on a couple of people's stock...hoping soon they will be ready to sell some...but I have tried to be patient as possible, but its so stinking hard. So, I went ahead and got these eggs, mostly because I'm hoping for a few good cockerels to pick from so I can keep working on those project girls I posted pics of a while back...the silver salmons, but not quites girls. They have a young one in with them, but I'm not quite sure he is what I need on them. I'll do a couple small controlled test hatches on the chicks to see what come of them. For the most part he is getting his training from the old ladies on how to behave and be a gentleman. I think from now on when I have young cockerels ready, they will go in with the ladies for a time. They certainly don't put up with anything, which is very good...

guess I should have been more speicific like what breed or mix do you think it is. Owell was just trying for a new subject. Im getting very impaitent for my marans eggs to hatch out. lock down is the 14th and so far all look good. Just hoping the chicks are as pretty as most of the eggs.

Agreed! A nice mature flock of older females does a wonderful job at teaching the young males some manners. My young ones go straight into the laying flock just before they turn 4 mos old.....I tell them to just think of it as summer camp and summer will be over before you know it.

So now my guess would be maybe some BCM cross Cochin or perhaps Jersey Giant or some breed of substance and large structure. Does it have feathered shanks?

Thanks Math Ace. I would agree I cant remember any of our other breeds starting out this big.
This is our first experience with the BCM. Do you think the color will get darker or do they usually start out the color they will lay?
