Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

sounds exciting...you'll have to keep us posted how this hatch goes with your settings! I love hearing about the things people do with their hatches and how they turn out. I've learned a ton and have tried a few and my hatch rates have definitely improved..particularly on the shipped hatching eggs.

Just opened a package of shipped eggs a few minutes ago, the post lady has my name and number next to her phone down at the local post office. If that's not an indicator I can't get a hold of Marans stock locally then I don't know what is.

I'm really keeping my fingers crossed for this batch....they are blue birchens...giving them another go round. I have some lavender silver sussex eggs coming in the next couple of days to go with these in the incubator...I am really looking forward to seeing what hatches this time around.

I am going to try the Blue Birchen eggs this time too. Just won an auction.

awesome! you should be getting them soon...we'll probably be able to set them around the same time and can keep up on the progress...Were they for the 6 eggs on ebay? I saw those last night...cute pic of the chicks.

So now my guess would be maybe some BCM cross Cochin or perhaps Jersey Giant or some breed of substance and large structure. Does it have feathered shanks?

You are very close and correct. I had gotten a couple laying hens awhile back one was a jersey giant and one was a sex link just needed more eggs at time and they had been only cooped up with 2 BCM roosters so I hatched a few just to see and surprisingly all so far have came out with feathered shanks. Only did a couple since I new they would be crosses but was just curios how strong the gene were and what the chicks would look like.

We can leaqrn alot doing that type of experimenting & you can always find a homefor them if the result is not what you want to keep.

Nice looking eggs Jennifer. Where did you get your Lavender Ams? A couple of those Marans eggs are really dark. That is my goal.....................LOL

I got the Lavender Ameraucanas from the SQ egg swap from Sebrightmom.

When I say that my birds originated from Bev Davis or are of Bev Davis lines, it is soley for the purpose of letting prespective buyers or interested parties know where my birds came from. I find that some people want to know where I got my start because they may specifically be looking for stock from that particular breeder or they may not, and some people couldn't care less and just want dark egg layers....it's all good with me for whatever reason they want the bird or breed, but I am sure to let them know that just because they originated from Bev's lines does not mean that they are Bev's birds and she is not here making breeding decisions for me and telling me who to breed to who or who not to breed. When I got my first birds and they reached breeding age...it was up to me to make those decisions there for they became my line but originated from Davis stock.

Hope this helps!

Very well spoken, Pinkchick!

Exactly how I feel! I've been breeding blrws for 6 years, and people still ask me what lines my birds are from. I don't want to be rude, but after all this time, what difference does it make? They are "my" line now. They see pictures of my birds, and still are wondering???

Same with the Marans.
Speaking of clean legs, most of the birds imported to the US, were from England where they bred for a clean leg. The feather leg has been bred back into most of the lines now, but that clean leg still pops up occasionally out of 2 feather legged parents. Its not a big deal.

Not even sure if I'm getting any of these but man it just made my day! In fact, DH asked me why I had such a big smile on my face after I read your post and I just said "Happy Birthday to ME!!!!"

Which got me a shake of the head and a

This has been my observation AND just my opinion. . . .

The Davis line tends to hold steady on egg color. . . . They may get slightly darker, but not drastically different.
The Jean line tends to have more variation on egg color - -- - Either start dark and get lighter OR start light and get darker ( I have seen folks report both cases).

So the answer to your question is MAYBE !

You should not count that as her permanent egg color until she has been laying a few weeks.

:frowHello everybody-

I got chicks in this morning. They were some LF ameraucanas. I'm happy to report that I have "Doctored" one of them with a crooked toe using INFORMATION I LEARNED ON THIS MARANS THREAD! Thank you, Bravo.
thumbsup.gif
I have it's little toes sandwiched between two spot bandaids. I never would have thought of that myself. I also have one with a foot that turns backward instead of forward. I'm trying to think of some little device I can secure to it's foot to hold it in the proper position. Something that is "L" shaped. I can easily bend its foot forward, but it won't stay there.

The two with foot deformities were "packing peanuts" but still it would be difficult for me to cull them. One is a silver and one is a lavender!

Whooo hoooo! I like your "L" shape reference much better. My "spoon" visual over pm, in retrospect, kinda didn't give a clear image LOL.

Can you place the chick with the backward facing foot in a small cup so that its foot is forced to stay in the proper position while the bones get a chance to harden? It will probably have to be in the cup for a "cup"-L

of days to get it to stay in the correct position.

Hope others have some great ideas

Did you post this to the sick/injured area too?
