A hen will usually only show 1 color, so I would think that if that birds has red/copper on its feathers, and is now getting siver hackles, then it is a roo.
Birchen hens will only have the silver hackles. No other color but black. All Birchen birds will have the silver hackles, both males & females. Its only the males that may also show another color. And if it does have 2 other colors, then it is not a pure birchen.
Thanks everyone for the replies. I will most def post photos when I can take some...company coming in for a few days, but that may be a good thing since she can entertain my daughter while I have a photo shoot
Uh oh. That one has def had some copper on its wing tips from the moment feathers were growing in. The eggs came from Gabbard Farms, which I believe to be very good. No comb difference between the 2 Blue Birchens we have. The only difference seems to be feathering, one all one color so far (blue) and a bit fluffier/rounder. And the one I was asking about is sleaker looking with the copper on its wings and silver in the hackle area.
At what age can you generally tell with a good probability what their gender is? Seems like we may need to hang on to these 2 longer to be sure since we can't keep roosters and I don't want to rehome the other if she's the only girl out of our 2 Marans.
I will try to get photos up too so everyone can weigh in on gender with the visual.
BTW, marquisella, I went to your blog and realized it was one of your photos of a stunning Blue Wheaten Pullet that made me decided I had to have one! We do have 2 Wheaten/Blue Wheaten Ameraucans chicks as well. Though I think both are Wheaten, don't see Blue. One very pretty - gorgeous wheat tones, the other has more varied color and some feathers that don't want to lay down flat but she is probably who we'll keep since she is most friendly with us.
Thanks!
Jeannie.
