Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Umm I love canning! It's almost as addicting as chickens...

Speaking of, here's some pics (finally) of a few of my babies. I'm a total newbie to this breed but quickly becoming a convert, I love these peeps! But I need some help figuring out what they are from the experts.

What color is this little guy (girl?)?

This one is my fav - so sweet! I think this a roo... at least I hope so because he's the only one feathering out like this. If not, I have one girl and 4 boys.

I hatched some BCM eggs and 2 had fused toes the middle and outer toe on one foot. Can anyone tell me if this is hereditary?

With my birds, I found that it is. I had half-sibblings that I bred. I did 2 test hatches of eggs (2 in the first and 4 in the second) and the first hatch 1 had fused toes on both feet; the second hatch had 1 with fused toes on 1 foot. I've switched roosters in this pen and will see if it makes a difference.

With the ones with the fused toes we operated on--the middle toe is a bit bent but otherwise perfect

I hate the power company!!! It was a beautiful day today, yet somehow we lost power! i have my precious 14 blue marans eggs in the hatcher due to hatch tomorrow... the thermometer read 80 degrees at it's low but the eggs felt cold

I put a hot water pack in there for them to sit on till power came back it was 3.5 hours! Am i ukered?! or will they just be a bit late do you think?

I Have some black copper chicks that got here last wednesday, they were day olds when shipped, but I think this little rooster was maybe a few days older. So he MIGHT be almost 3 weeks, he gets up on the side of the feeder and crows away. Way too cute.

Me thinks Math has a bit of a competitive nature...
Wanna race building this chicken pen/barn/coop?
Who raises the most roosters?
Who's rooster crows earliest?

Seriously, I wish I could win that barn race, but so far nothing is happening. The weather has had us stopped cold. BUT... I'm glad I'm not winning the most roosters hatched or the "youngest crowing roo" race. That young rooster must think he is pretty hot stuff.

Oh my, you might be right Ivywoods

I really do not care if I win, I just don't like to be alone in what I am doing!

We are still working on Coop #1, Dh moves so slow AND I can not help him on this one! He has a plan and it is all in his HEAD being kept under lock and key!
I am watching and taking notes . ... . Then when he turns his back AND I can get my hands on his tools . . . . I willl have coop #2 done before he knows what happened!

It would be nice if others were hatching as many cockerels as I am

congrats! i hope you have lots of luck with the blue birchens this time!!! and yay....blue wyandottes!! Sounds like we have a few of the same breeds and color varieties

Thank you. I have two baby blue birchens this morning

6 more birchen eggs to go but I am happy I have 2. With my other older bb girl now I have a total of 3. I just hope one of the new babies is a roo LOL!

Don't you have some birchen eggs set as well? When are they due? My blue wyandottes are the plain blue kind. Actually, one looks dark like almost black or is black (will have to see when I get him out of the bator) and one almost looks splash.

*****************Happy Easter everyone !!!****************************
